I wanna know how i can rip a dvd onto my computer into a format that can be shared. is there a way?

Ok, i get a mess of files when i rip it with these apps. i just wanna rip it into a avi. format or something so i can keep it on my external and watch it through a regular player. is there a seperate program for this>

dr divx is a simple (as in easy to use) and nice tool 2... makes avi files out of your movies. B)
