OK well I finally got my birthday money and im gonna upgrade very soon. Heres what im looking at now.

RAM (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-156-006&depa=0) It is cheap but got lots of 5 stars review, any thoughts about it. Gonne be get a gig of it.

CPU (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-379&depa=0) Barton 2500+, gonna oc it to a 3200 at least.

Mobo (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-127-185&depa=0)I think this NF7 is good, should be good to oc.

So all said and done im up to 300 so far. Gonna get a sleeving kit, Arctic Silver.

Any recomendation on a good not to expensive heatsink?

And i'm gonna try and get a 9800xt off of ebay for a little bit cheaper, any specific brand i should go with, saphire, abit, etc?

save ur 300 and get an amd64 and just use ur ram u have now. when the time comes and u have more money get better ram. as for the video card i would save that money also and get a 6800gt for the same price. ur spending the same money this way and getting 3 times the performance!

So I should buy an Amd 64 and put in 512mb of pc2100 and run a raedon 9000, no lets be realistic, Im don't have the money for amd 64bit. I don't want to buy one part a month either, im looking for a decent gaming rig that will last a year or two and right now this should be good. I see no point in even going 64 bit yet either as the rest of the world isn't that far along yet, no 64bit windows, so the full potential isn't reached yet. So my next upgrade will be 64.

Ya, waiting for something that long is not worth the improvments it might offer. Everything youve chosen looks great, the ram is a little iffy but looks ok.

Duffman
08-18-2004, 03:02 AM
yeah i thought so too but on newegg theres about 80 5 star reviews saying it runs great, ocs great, and is overall great.

Well then you cant go wrong with it can you. Does it list the ram timings? Couldnt see any.

Also how much of a preformance upgrade will i get going fomr a xp1800 w/a 9000pro and 512 of pc2100?

Tormentor
08-18-2004, 03:09 AM
The biggest improvment you will see is in games. When comparing my buddies 2500 with mine in normal program use i couldnt really see much of a diffrence to be honest. Exept when running many apps becuase i only have 256mb of ram.

Duffman
08-18-2004, 03:24 AM
nice.. also there is about 5 different nf7 boards wich should i go with?

Tormentor
08-18-2004, 03:34 AM
Go with the NF7-S ver.2. Make sure it has the nforce 2 chipset.

You will already have one when you buy that CPU. It comes with one.

but will that suffice with the overclocking?

ya it's quite good.

only problem is the 60mm fan is kinda loud so u may want to look into buying an 80mm fan and an 80mm to 60mm fan adaptor.
this combo is super quiet when compared to the default fan.

Yup. Mine runs fine @3200+ with stock heatsink and an 80mm fan with a fan adaptor.

no one is buying the amd64 for the os anyway. i have no idea what ppl r thinking. "oh, i'm gonna wait. windows64 isn't out yet". ppl get the amd 64 cuz of it shear power ppl. but, it's ur money. just thought to throw some suggestions.

its like buying a car because it can go 200mph when theres no place in the world you can over 60 yet, if nothing is using the full potential of the cpu why should i pay for it.

Windows XP pro x64(preview) is available here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/evaluation/upgrade.mspx). And it is free for 360 days after installation.

The fact that it is available now but time limited indicates that the retail version will soon be released.

Why not make a ghost image? Restoring that would be a lot quicker that formatting and re-installing.
