Okay, maybe this belongs in hardwareworld, but as it's relating to movies, I'm posting it here.

I just picked up a new DVD player, I was specifically looking for one that would play PAL DVDs, and possibly DivX movies as well. I got the Phillips DVP 642, it was less than $100 CDN at WalMart, and this sucker plays everything. DivX, XviD, VCD, SVCD, MP3, NTSC, PAL, all regions, all brands of DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CDR, and CDRW I've thrown at it.

I was a little annoyed, because they had them in at factory direct a couple days ago, for $70, but I didn't have any money then, and they were sold out of them today. But I saved $20 in gas by not having to drive to Toronto, so I suppose it works out in the end...

Well if it didn't come with hte latest firmware here you go http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?scy=US&tmplt=CE_EU&slg=ENG&SearchTxt=DVP642&ctn=DVP642/17 for the dvp642-17..This player is great NikkiD (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/member.php?u=1244) ..Its so wonderful to burn 11 eps of dead like me on 1 dvd and watch them on tv..I burn all my files as data.NO more converting :) All the svcd's and vcd's I extract the mpeg's and burn ..Mix them up avi's mpeg's, no problem. The only issues I have so far is slow fast fwd rewind only 8x..Another little trick with a finicky xvid (colour off abit or sound off abit) is to press the system menu button while playing the movie..Have a look here http://forums.divx.com/viewforum.php?forum=21 and http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=dvp642&Search=Search&country=&orderby=Name&hits=25 ENJOY...:D

Very nice IKE. :D

I was able to find an online supplier that ships to Canada, but the price difference is HUGE, with the conversion to CDN $ it's almost 4 times as much. I do like the idea of having the built in hard drive as well for recording TV, similar to a Tivo, but most of the shows I watch I can download in a matter of a few minutes anyway.

EDIT: Okay this is farkin weird... is anyone else seeing this? My post is nested inside accat13's post... or is it just me?

Ive had that Philips for months now, got it for $69 and even posted awhile back. As for the XviD if it starts and looks mushy just hit the Menu key on the right twice and it clears up. Also holding Stop for a few seconds opens the tray. Anyway at that price you cant touch it for what it does...

Well then they were either "misplaced" in one of the forum restores, or the search function on this board sucks.

DVP642 sounds ideal but doesn't seem to be available in the UK. Bugger.

I got this DVD player last week. The only problem I have is that it won't play divx3 avi's that were encoded with virtualdub. Ones encoded with nandub will play. I tried MPEG4 Modifier, but it doesn't see them as being a valid MPEG4 video.

In the old thread, I had said I was also trying to find the DVP642, but they were sold out. A week ago, however, I finally got it. And it is awesome! And only $70!! :01: :D

P.S. To make it region free, follow these steps:

1. Turn on the player.
2. Open the tray.
3. Press the following sequence on the remote: 7 8 9 OK 0
4. The number 0 will appear on the lower left side of your screen.
5. Your player is now region free! Put in a DVD and enjoy! :)

The zero after the 789 OK is the region, you can change it to any region, or just put it at 0 for all regions (I hear this has flawless PAL to NTSC and vice versa conversions too)

I don't know why they rename these things for different countries, haven't they spotted that the market is global these days!

If I read the thread correctly, with this I'll be able to simply burn any video file to a DVD-RW as data and simply play it (mpg, avi, asf, wmv, etc.). Ideal! :D

Going shopping on Monday.

if you have an xbox laying around, you can mod it and install XBMC (media center)... it will play literally anything...

i was gonna buy an avi player, but found out about that... and bought an used xbox for 120... i modded it.. and now its the best thing i've spent money on...

i've got the DVP-642 and a LiteOn LVD-2001. they're both good players, though each has a few good & bad points. they're mainly really similar to each other, but the Philips has better decoding of DivX v3.11... while the LiteOn has much better, more convenient menus & remote control and the ability to use the zoom button to fine-tune the aspect ratio if the file is not quite right or if part the picture is being lost off the edge of the screen (the Philips has no way to correct that, as far as i know). otherwise, the playback quality of DVD, MPEG-1/2, VCD/SVCD, DivX 5, XviD, and compatibility with disc brands, are just about the same with both players.

choosing between the two really depends on which shortcomings you're most willing to put up with.
