Should we show active members aor members active in last 15 minutes.

Seeing 17 people on instead of 105 makes me lonely.

BTW, did people get lost in the move?

I personally would rather see active members.

It would advantagous to management if it showed active members in the last 15 minutes.

It makes the board seem bigger and...uh...more active.

If I go to a board that has 17 active members vesus 76 active in last 15 minutes, I will probably get a b better idea of the forum dynamics and be more likely to stay a while. they will also be more likely to refer people this way.

I know that the size of the forum is what attracted me.

I've never really paid attention to how many people are on at the moment...I just read/reply/post.

Why the shrug, are you cool or something?

I post as I see fit, but I hang around, rather than log off, if the forum appears active.

Sometimes it is fun to shoot the shit with a worldwide population base.

I couldn't give a fuck about filesharing.

Thanks for not getting it, daddy-o. *sigh*

i think that the posts and members that have joined the board make this place seem large already and the members active doesnt say much compared to those 2

Appearance is not reality.

It is currently set to show users in the last 15 minutes.

The old board showed users who had been online for 45 minutes but claimed to be showing users who had been online for 15 minutes.

So why the precipitous drop off? I must have offended them, that is all I can think of.

You might have missed my edit in between burning peoples houses down... ;)

The old board showed users who had been online for 45 minutes but claimed to be showing users who had been online for 15 minutes.

I guess that would explain some of the "drop-off".

I saw a post by someone that indicated that the old board used 15 minutes as well.

They made a post from last November. It gave a total of active members and those active in the last 15 minutes. Add the numbers up and they were equal.

If the old board was wrong, I guess I was used to the delusion. :D

The old board said 15 minutes but was set at 45 minutes when I purchased it. I left it at 45 minutes. This board is actually set at 15 minutes, therefore the active users should be about 1/3 of what it said on the old IPB board.

Hope this explains

So, one could say false statistics were being shown... worse thing is that it was on purpose... it wasn't even an error... hobbes is right, the place somehow seems slower now (less dynamic?), even though it was all an illusion.

the false statistcs were being shown, correct. I was not aware of this until Withcheese brought it up a few weeks ago, however.

7 out of 10 forums do this. IPB has a setting to change the number of minutes the member list is for. You can change it, but it doesn't change on the main page where it states the minutes. This is just one of the flaws in the IPB script.

For reasons dealing with human psychology, I would recommend displaying members active in the last 45 minutes.

People see 17 people online, think the site is dead and move on.

It's just my opinion, but I'm right.

certainly can't argue that posting has almost come to a complete stop.

Perhaps show user online within the last 24hrs and be honest and show that figure in the tale as well, maybe thatll make you all feel better again, otherwise you all may consider therapy also...

The difference in numbers between showing active members in the last 15 mins and last 45 mins is only going to be those who have left in the last half hour less those who have come in in the last half hour. That is only likely to be significant if there are a lot of people who pop in for just a few minutes.

Obviously we need more people visiting. However those two statistics would tell us whether we need more people in general, or if we need people who are going to stick around a little longer. But statistics won't make the board any busier.
