I was just wondering why when you download things off of the internet it says it will take 10 sec for cable or 2 sec for LAN.
What is LAN and why is it so much faster?

LAN stands for Local Area Network and normaly run at 10/100/1000 MB/s.
This is only really used in business for internet speeds due to the cost.
Cable normaly runs a 0.5/1/2 MB/s and is aimed at the home user

also LAN is what it says Local, the computers are all hardwired together like in an office, factory, my front bedroom, yes I am a sad bastard, but the kids insisted, should never have told them what a hub was for :D

and the internet is a WAN - wide area network (very original names u can tell) and the cable speeds are much slower, but having a home LAN is very useful if u have more than one computer :P

lan - local area network
man - metropolitan area networ ( american term not used anywhere really.)
wan -wide area network ( such as the internet)

I have been told a good distinction between the pair is that with lan you own all the hardware. while a wan you lease it off other people like your isp.

LAN - MAN - WAN - GAN, believe me

but for this point of view it is enough to distinguish between LAN and WAN.
