Ok. I have used Bitorrent to download many movies. However, they go at like 3kbs. How do people get them going at like 150?

Here is my setup. I have a DSL connection and a Linksys Router, so what do I need to do to get my speeds up?

I see guides at the top but I dont know what to use or do...can someone please explain to me..

Port forward your router. ( http://www.portforward.com/ )

will port forwarding slow down my connection at all? What does torrentbits do?

port forwarding will boost your download speed. Your router 'blocks' your downloads. if you pord forward the ports you use for bittorent your download speed wil increase.

torrentbits is a bittorent filesharing website.

Alright sweet, I've got my port forwarded for Bitorent.

Now, the port number for WinMX is 6699 ....thats it...not 2, 4digit, numbers, so what do I put in the Start and End section of my web settings thing?

Also I get this damn error ALL the time...it comes up like every couple of mins
http://home.earthlink.net/~bigdawgfox2007/Bitorrent%20Error.JPG

And it never seems to connect or download much at ALL.

It may be a blacklisted port. It certainly appears so from the error message you're getting.

Try a different port number, above 7000 shouldn't be blacklisted. So in your port range - the Start and End section - put something like 7001 and 7011.

But that wouldnt be the correct port to help out bitorrent would it...Doesnt it have to be a certain one. And even if I opened a bad port, it should still connect without using that port..I would think.

I have gotten that error message before I opened the ports though, I have always gotten that message, but it downloads stuff. Last night I left it on all night and it didnt download AT ALL.

No it doesn't have to be a particular port. Ports range from single digits to 67,000 or so and few are specific to a certain type of connection. Recently I got that message when trying to download a movie from Torrentbits. They had blacklisted a range of ports including the one you mention. I did what I described to you and the problem ceased.

However, I use ABC and I don't have a router.

I still imagine the principle would be the same with your BT client, provided you forwarded the appropriate ports. Give it a try, if it works then great, if not it's a wasted 30 seconds ;)

Yep it dont matter what ports forward aslong as you tell your client what ports they are.

I have Azuerus and just have one single port open, 7882 if I remember rightly.

You'll find the common ones are blacklisted because a lot of isps try to throttle the speed on them

Hmm, I'm still a little lost lol. Do I need to tell Bitorent what port to use? And so can just opening up one port allow al my p2p programs to go faster?

What is torrentbits.org? Is it better then Suprnova, and is it free?

DanB

Torrentbits is very hard to signup at it but its meant to be very good.

Yeah you do need to tell BT what ports to use, you should be able to do it in the options or config box

Whichever Bit-torrent client you are using - bittornado, ABC, azeureus, bit comet or whatever - you will have to tell it which ports to use. Earlier you said this:

so what do I put in the Start and End section of my web settings thingSo put the 7001 value in the start box and 7011 in the end box. That's telling the Bit-torrent client what ports you want to use.

Torrentbits is a good site for speed but it is horrible to browse and doesn't have as much choice as Suprnova.

Also don't forget to forward the ports to your router.

You ever had a look at filelist.org?

Nope. I tend to stick with what I know :P

Any good? I really must broaded my horizons past Suprnova, Torrentbits, Youceff and *cough* Empornium.

It doesn't seem that bad, I have only been using it the last week or so.

I have never had any luck with torrentbits, the times I have managed to sign up they have deleted my account while I have been waiting to be allowed to download whtat I wanted

My experience with TorrentBits is weird. I signed up back in August, thought it kinda sucked and didn't download or upload a thing for nearly six weeks. When I seen Cheese's thread about the ratio I remembered about my account and surprisingly it was still active

Anyway, it's good if you know what you're looking for - a specific movie, for example. Since the download speeds are excellent.

BigDawg, that looks like the original bt client, I'd recommend updating to a newer one like bittornado(or az) cos they are very easy to configure and have a few extras, you can get bittornado from http://www.bittornado.com/ .:D

Thanks for all ur help guys! I didnt know there were other bitorrent clients to use. I will get bittornado, forward port 7001-7011, and tell bittornado to USE 7001-7011.

This is correct I think...Thanks!!!

Edit: Well I downloaded bittornado and its already downloading at like 15kbs without any ports...so that helped a lot! lol

Is that where I enter the ports?

I entered the ports and the download speed is at around 30kbs now...thats 15 more...does that sound right?

dodgy368
10-22-2004, 10:22 PM
Yep, your speed will get even better, 30kb/ps is just under average but should climb a bit more if you've got a 576 connection.

I've got a 576 connection and I'm not happy with under 40 kb/ps but it all depends on what you're downloading.:)

What the hell is a 576 connection and how u know I got one? lol Thanks for your help.

How would I do this on Kazaa Lite? I need to know what ports it uses default to enter them..

576 connection would be just over 1/2 megabit per second. You know if you got one if, err, that's what you signed up for with your ISP.

You still use kazaa

BigDawg, who is your ISP and what connection did they give you(broadband, 1meg, 2meg etc)?

bigdawgfoxx

I have Sprint DSL and I have a 1.5Mbps connection.

dodgy368

Port 3508 is the default on my k-lite.

If you get onto a good torrent you should get speeds of up to at least 100kb/ps and sometimes well over that.:D

bigdawgfoxx
10-23-2004, 09:20 PM
Awesome.

If the port is 3508, what do I put for start and end if theres just one number?

Would I put like 3500-3510?

dodgy368
10-23-2004, 09:36 PM
Just open 3508 on your router.

bigdawgfoxx
10-25-2004, 11:24 AM
so i put 3508 as start and 3508 as finish?

Thanks you guys have been a TON of help! My downloads arent 3kbs nemore on bittorent

If you changed your port settings you need to update your router setting (port forward) did you do this?

bigdawgfoxx

Ive forwarded ports on my router and told bitornado to use those ports..Im still only going like 3-4kbs with 21 peers

This is why i use Torrentbits and Fasttracker. i got this ages ago off of Fasttracker, no password bullshit. I turned it on 12 at nigh woke up 7 not only had my download finnished but id uploaded 700mb's as well. Join FT and stop having to fuck around with Suprnova. Best place to ask for your problem is there forum.
