I need software to make phone calls from

I need software that will let me make phone calls through my modem. NOT internet call, just a regular phone call with my 56k modem on my regular phone line. I'm sick of my cordless phone going dead when me and my brother play games online. It was nice to wear my headset, and be able to talk to him, plus hear the game. I used to have a program, but its been some time, and i forgot what it was called. freeware would be best, but please suggest something if you know of it.

ive asked for this before, but never found anything - i think (though i dont know) skype only does voip calls?

it would be useful, cos you could also use your pc as an answering machine :)
