Ahh bonfire night.... one of the better nights out in the Uk.... from the time i was there i have very fond memories of lewes, East sussex, and the parades before the various displays. Bonfires as big as st. pauls cathedral, and every year some drunk idiot believing he could light his cigarette from it. Then the displays, most of them free to watch and of the highest standard from incredibly talented pyrotech type people whilst eating the greasiest burgers or hot dogs (not like the ones we get here...english pork sausages are used) and a portion of chips (fries to americans...but not those thin things we get..chunky chips) :P

We have the 4th july with fireworks freely and cheeply available but i have to say that Lewes is a shining example of how it should be done.

The insurance on ANY car for someone my age will cost about £1500, and that's for a shite car, I can get this 2l mondeo and pay probably about £1700 insurance for it. Ironically, the fine IS cheaper than the insurance!
Even more annoying is the fact that the insurance will be worth more than the car itself!

Wrong insurance company, simple as that :)

My bike is gonna cost me £139 tpft when I put it back on the road, that's with Bennets Bike insurance, with Norwich Union it would cost £428 tpft, same policy, different company, £300 better off :)
It's really worth spending £10 on phone call, swill save you a fortune, and fight them against each other, tell 1 company the other one said £xxx, then when they offer less, go back to the other company, honestly most will move on their price to get the deal, the guys on the phone are usually on comission so they have a percentage to play with :)

The end of September thing is bollocks, when you think about it.

They work the tax out whether you put a figure into the box or not. If you've done it incorrectly they will correct you, send you a letter about it and ammend your bill accordingly. They mislead you into getting your form in early cause they get all stressed and overworked in January, I reckon.

Exactly, mate. I was having a joke with my stressed out comment. :D

No doubt it does help with staffing issues to have them staggered throughout the year but revenue collection is the biggest aim.

The money isn't actually due until Jan 31st no matter when you submit it but no doubt most people pay up on the first demand as it's a bit frightening getting letters from the Tax people.

Ooo me knowing more than you :01:

Your return MUST be in by Jan 31st or you get a £100 fine, the payment must be paid by Sept 30th the following year unless it's below a certain amount and you wish to add it to the following years :)

They don't often get the money early, most people are PAYE.

The only time they get the money early is when they end up paying a rebate. That way someone has paid too much in advance.

They would be seriously happy, nay ecstatic if everybody just payed the right amount at the right time.PAYE is a perfect example of the Inland Revenue getting their money early.

Also the current Self Assessment scheme requires self employed folk to pay next years tax on account. I'd say that due to timing shenanighas 95% of people in the UK pay their tax early.

No you don't :P

Your return must be in by 31st Jan but you don't get fined unless it shows that you owe them money or if it's a Partnership return.

The due date for payment is always Jan 31st unless it's the second payment on account in which case it is July 31st. September 30th is only significant if you want them to work out the tax for you, it's not a payment deadline of any sort ;)

No it isn't.

The company you pay your PAYE to doesn't have to submit it to the Inland Revenue until May 21st after the end of the current tax year.

This would cause problems for the company in the long run but technically they (IR) cannot impose any fines upon the company until then.

How is it an IR rip off.

You pay as you earn. However the employer does not give it to the revenue until the end of the tax year.

So you are cool, you pay as you earn
The IR are cool, they get it when it's due.
The employer is cool, they have your money to pay to the IR.

I say again your contention that it is a rip-off is pish.

Because the IR require it monthly throughout the tax year, this is technically before it is due so you cannot use it for your purposes.

I didn't say it was a rip off, btw. It is a very logical and workable scheme. I said that it was an example of the IR getting their money before it is due. Which is most definitely not pish.

manker
10-25-2004, 09:40 PM
Nonsense.

You are discussing PAYE, which is personal taxation and using the rules for businesses or self employed people which are annual returns.

PAYE is just that, pay as you earn. 714, SC60, Business tax etc are an entirely different matter.

You are a reader of manuals and a talker of pish.
I'm sure of the rules regarding both PAYE and SA. Completely sure.

714 and SC60 do not exist, btw.

Upon reading a manual or two you will find that what i've said is not pish.
