I wish to test out LInux as I have heard a lot of good things about it. I want to use a free distro that can run along side of windows. A simple one aswell which will help me get used to Linux. Any suggestions?

Absolutely. For the Linux beginner, I suggest trying a live distro.
Either MandrakeMove or Knoppix should be ideal.
