Jonno :cool:I actually bought a beggar beer, and wine on friday, every morning when i

owned a college-restaurant 10 years ago.

In most cases accompanied by a firm bratwurst or some hot soup.

A small effort: i made good money those days.

It took about 3 months before he first said thanks.

First time i saw him smile.

Beautiful eyes.....

First full sentence was "happy holidays, have one on me......."

He gave me a bottle of wine he must have begged for quite some time.

I later learned it was a christmas-gift from his regular liquorstore.

I don't tell this to show how good i am; my guess is i received more than

i gave.

Like the moments he wasn't there on his regular spot, but left a note

appologising he couldn't receive my daily treat.

Etc, etc....

Give a coin now that I'm in SC, but I'd ignore if I were still in NJ cause most 'beggers' were professional hustlers....it was a job to them

Not long ago, I didn't have enough money to eat. I lost everything except my car and a few belongings. Now, my first thought is how nobody was there to help me, ( except my sweethear who stayed beside me) now I tell them to get the hell away from my car. I know there is jobs around, we have 5 openings on my shift alone ;)

Begging is a lifestyle choice, not a way of making ends meet between jobs, that is what welfare is for.

I don't support it, it is entirely their choice.

I must admit I would never turn a begger/tramp/homeless person away without talking to them first. I believe in treating all people as human regardless of their circumstances. You can normally tell the frauds from the needy.
I once spoke with a homeless guy who had nothing but his music, i regualy saw him playing his acoustic guitar busking for cash. I asked him what he wanted from life and he replied "just a job and a home to call my own"
After meeting him regualy on my way to work I asked him again "what do you want from life?" The reply he gave brought a lump to my throat; "I want people to hear my finished Rock Opera, I'll never make money with it but the music is all I have left."
I've never seen him since. I hope that he is now making money writing songs to be sung by the famous.http://www.filesharingtalk.com/vb3/images/smilies/smile.gif

I agree.

Giving money to a "beggar" in my city is basically just giving money to someone for their next fix.

If I saw someone of genuine need the I would, perhaps, help them. However, I live next to the train station and I've seen the same faces I've seen for the last 5 or so years. I know for a fact some of them are well housed and on benefits but they still hang around and scrounge off people who actually earn what little money they have.

I'm open minded about a lot of things but begging is something I really hate. Like Hobbes says that is what welfare is for.

I had a guy in a wheelchair try to pickpocket me last year.

The scam is some guy pushes his mate up to you in the wheelchair and then asks you to help his mate to sit up properly in the chair. Bar-steward was all over my trouser pockets as I helped him up.

Unlucky for him I'm a skint layabout student. :D

This is poverty on your side, Hobbes.

For instance the guy i told about, he lost his wife and kid in an accident,

lost it and went astray.

Ever worked in a homelessshelter, Hobbes??

Listened to any stories???

Beggars ain't choosers........

And wellfare in America???...............http://www.rikk-cowsys.com/style_emoticons/default/huhpmsl.gif

Sure there are people abusing us overly stuffed rich people by asking for

our leftovers and how dare they????

I hope you will once at least endure where poor RPerry was(but without the

car etc.....)without any options lost.

And knowing you would bounce back, you would be a little more considerate

than Rob after that.

I don't think too hard about it. If I'm not in a rush and I have a pocketfull of change I will give the bloke some money, if not I won't.

I'm aware that they have a means of supporting themselves if I don't give anything at all (in the UK) but what else would I have done with the 50p.

Depends on the beggar.

After a while you get to know them all (well, almost all of them), and know what each will do with the money.

Some I give money, some I buy food, and to the one who keeps pissing and sh*tting outside my house, I give kicks in the face!
