View Full Version : Why lock a topic because it is old?

I noticed a thread was locked because it was "old".

Can somebody explain that logic.

If people have enough interest to bump it, then it is still active. If people don't like the topic, it will soon disappear.

I'm just unclear how it "helps" the forum. Who thinks "great, that topic is locked, that's why I love this board".

Or are people more likely to say, "WTF, that was unnecessary Mod intervention".

A nice example of how Mods can screw the board by micromanagement.

When a Mod does something, he needs to ask himself, "Why is this necessary and how will this improve the board".

Absolutely correct, Hobbes, as ever.

Not to mention the huge cache of threads that have gone the way of the betamax.

The board is doomed, I say.

I agree , if they can't leave the threads as is, we don't have a hope in hell! :(

I vote that this should be moved to everthing related to this board!

I believe I read somewhere that Admin/Mods do not have to account to the members for their actions. That is why the Forum is in the state that it is today. They have just got their necessary and unnecessary actions mixed up.:(

Actually I agree with that, over the last several months the mods here have taken some batterings, when in actual fact a lot of the time it was not the mods, they were left to pick up the pieces, which to some extent is their job.
The difference being lumping them altogether is unfair, these are'nt some muppet on the end of a phone at customer services, their our friends who give their time to try to keep this place running smoothly and personally I think it sucks that everyone is quick to slag them down when it's not them that done anything wrong, but not praise them when they do good.

This being a prime example :)

We are 'The Management' and thus quite rightly hated by the 'normal' members.

Its the way it is....we will always be seen as 'the enemy' by some.

So be it...

Tomorrow we invade Milton Keynes.....

Sorry Mods, I should have said Admin. I am just a crude caveman who thinks of anyone who locks a thread as a MOD, because that is the job he is doing.

 Why?

@Hobbes...... (In true 7th style) If an old thread is bumped it will cause big db errors which will crash the board systematically erasing all members, our flesh will tighten as we shrink and "Un-Grow" until there is no evidence of this board or anyone who ever visited it

Loads of threads that we wasted our lives creating, that often meandered into things worth preserving, have been erased unnecessarily.

It's not book burning. But it's certainly page burning.

I think it is time that all actions by an Admin/Mod are recorded 'where they occur'. i.e. If a post is moved, deleted, edited, merged then the Official concerned should leave his/her calling card at the thread concerned.

There are/were far too many posts disappearing and could not be traced. If an Admin/Mod 'jokingly' edits a post then he/she should PM the member concerned and explain their actions.

If they edit posts, then it leaves their mark.. they have no option on this with this software.

When i edited Jonno's titles (as an example)... he knew it was me, i did PM him too..

The bumbing old threads use to be somewhat annoying when there was more members,
some new threads got lost on second or other pages if old ones wass bumbed up.

You know, one asks a question, it drops to second page because of old threads arising,
and the question dont get enough time to ppl to see and answer.
Not many ppl checks out the second page and beyond.

Thats my view on it.
Im sure i'll be raped about it.
