THE CANADIAN REPORT

Americans look to move north

JIM FOX

Many Americans have a new interest in Canada after the re-election of President Bush - not for flu shots, but to move.

In what's being called "backlash" by fervent Democrats, Canada's immigration Web site - canada.gc.ca - is flooded with a record number of visits from U.S. residents dismayed over the election results. Immigration lawyers also are busy with calls about moving to Canada.

Many people are doing more than just casual surfing, said Maria Iadinardi of the Citizenship and Immigration Department.

"The most-visited pages were the skilled worker online self-assessment pages to see if they'd meet the selection criteria," she said.

A new record was set within hours of Bush's acceptance speech as six times more Americans than usual at the site, amounting to 115,016 hits.

The waiting time to move is shorter if you're married to a Canadian, for which help is available at www.marryanamerican.ca, a satirical site also being inundated by visitors.

Prime Minister Paul Martin said he'd welcome aspiring U.S. immigrants but joked they can't say they're refugees or expect preferential treatment.

The number of U.S. immigrants to Canada has slowed to about 5,000 a year from a high of 23,000 during the Vietnam War.

Prime Minister Martin has made a new request to U.S. President George W. Bush to settle cross-border trade irritants.

"Obviously, during any election campaign there is a hiatus in certain numbers of matters," Martin said.

There's a need for a "new multilateralism" on international problems such as punitive U.S. duties on Canada's softwood lumber and wheat, and restrictions on imports of Canadian beef over one incident of mad cow disease.

Martin called Bush on Wednesday to congratulate him on his election victory and also spoke with Democrat John Kerry to congratulate him on his campaign.

News in brief

Citing abuse from parishioners, low wages and lack of job security, some stressed-out United Church of Canada ministers are putting their faith in the Canadian Auto Workers. In an unprecedented move, about 30 clergy from Ontario and others from Western Canada met with union officials to begin an organizing drive.

Former football star Tommy Kane was called "manipulative" and "narcissistic" as he was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the stabbing death of his estranged wife last year. The former Seattle Seahawk and Toronto Argonaut pleaded guilty in a Montreal courtroom to manslaughter in the death of Tammara Shaikh, a mother of four children.

Montreal-based Molson Inc. will give shareholders a special premium if they agree to a proposed merger with Colorado beer maker Adolph Coors Co. The offered $3.26-a-share dividend is a response to shareholder demands before they agree to back the original $6-billion merger.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty says gambling is here to stay despite a report showing problem gamblers contribute more than a third of the revenues. "We have come to rely on gambling revenue," McGuinty said. The province pulls in $4 billion a year from casinos.

Facts and figures

The strength of the Canadian economy - adding 34,000 jobs last month and a steady jobless rate of 7.1 percent - helped pushed the dollar to a 12-year high.

The Canadian dollar is 83.50 cents U.S., while a U.S. dollar returns $1.19760 Canadian before bank exchange fees.

The Bank of Canada's key interest rate is steady at 2.5 percent, while the prime-lending rate is 4.25 percent.

Canadian stock markets are mixed, with Toronto's composite index lower at 8,868 points and the Canadian Venture Exchange higher at 1,636 points.

People tend to react emotionally to things like politics.

I doubt anyone will actually move, but I'm sure they will threaten to.

Anyone who moves to Canada as the winter starts to close in certainly has my respect, it's a damn cold place.

I wonder how many of those hits are from people of military age who are expecting a resumption of the draft?

ha, u make me laugh. the only place that's cold is in the territories, i lived in toronto for 2 years, trust me, it's not as cold as people say, and here in the west, well, it rains in the winter, maybe 1 day of snow if we're lucky (not the mountains dimwit lol, near the ocean). lowest temp i've ever seen is -5 degrees here. I also lived in new york for a year (new york city), and IMHO, it's colder than Toronto.

Unless there's a big difference in 100 miles or so, Rat is way out on his temps.

It is currently about 9C.

My thermometer in the Porch currently reads 18.5C...

Granted, this does not take into account "Wind Chill", however as there isnt any wind, this is negligable.

I do know that I have my windows and doors open to air the house, and the heating isnt on... might be my last chance :P

There is a LOT of cloud cover... so this may be affecting it.

I have a feeling a Storm is on the way ;)

EDIT:

Thought you were in Smog Town... just 50 miles away?

Perhaps we might consider that the very local temperature spike is coming from within the adode, perchance even related to the tropical depression that emanates from the keyboard everytime Rat makes a post.http://www.rikk-cowsys.com/style_emoticons/default/blahblah1.gif http://www.rikk-cowsys.com/style_emoticons/default/blahblah1.gifhttp://www.rikk-cowsys.com/style_emoticons/default/blahblah1.gif

New Rule: Stop saying that blue state people are out of touch with the values and morals of the red states. I'm not out of touch with them. I just don't share them. In fact, and I know this is about 140 years late, but to the Southern States, I would say, "Upon further consideration, you CAN go. I know that's what you've always wanted, and we've reconsidered. So go ahead. And take Texas with you."

You know what they say. If at first you don't secede, try, try again. And give my regards to President Charlie Daniels.

I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I almost forgot, this is the time of healing. The time when blue states and red states come together because we have so much to offer each other. "Spice Rack" meet "Gun Rack." "Picky about bottled water," say hello to "Drinks from a garden hose." "Bought an antique nightstand at an estate sale," meet "Uses a giant wooden spool he stole from the phone company as a coffee table."

Sorry, there I go again, kidding when I should be healing. Hey, say what you will about the Republicans, they do stand for something: Armageddon, but it's something. Democrats, on the other hand, have been coasting for years on Tom Daschle's charisma. But that's not enough anymore. Democrats will never win another election if they keep trying to siphon off votes from the Republicans. They will only win by creating a lot more Democrats. And you don't do that by trying to leach onto issues that you should be denouncing.

You wind up - you wind up in a goose-hunting outfit a week before the election--trying to appeal to guys who would sooner vote for the goose. Guys who even in down-to-earth, economically-ailing Ohio, thought blowjobs more important than job-jobs.

Hey, these folks aren't "undecideds." They're not in play. No, what the Democrats need are fresh, new ideas that are dumb and hateful enough to win these people over.

You know, stuff like, "No drinking on Christmas." Or how about a Constitutional Amendment protecting the song, "God Bless America"? I say, let's put a fetus on the dollar bill! With Reagan!

And you know what country has been asking for an ass-kicking in the worst way? Finland. Yes, Democrats need a really, really stupid, meaningless and utterly symbolic issue. And by issue, of course, I mean, thing to hate.

How about this? An amendment that says people with gerbils are threatening the sanctity of pet ownership--and that from now on, pet owning will be defined only as the relationship between a person and his cat or dog.

Now, my opponent may disagree. That's because he's a fag.

So, Democrats - Democrats and liberals, stop saying you're going to move because Bush won. Real liberals should be pledging to stay because Bush won. Trust me, you can't get away from Bush by moving to France. Because that's where we're invading next.
makes sense to me

Bill Maher for President!

I like Bill Maher. He has an overwhelming sense of logic.

However, he has had some bitch ass jokes like the one about the beheading stopping neck brace and others. I would have loved to punch him in the mouth for that.

On his last show he got into it with one of his "big screen" guests. I had to side Maher on that one.
