I am trying to re-set up my old pc today as I have to send my current back on the warranty and have run into a slight problem :(

As far as I am aware i have set up everyting ok, both the cd drive and the hard drive set to master, both on their own independant ide cables and both plugged into my mobo.

I power it up and it just tells me it can't find any IDE devices, the cd or the hd, yet it can find the floppy device.

Any one got any ideas please?

Something to do with "Startup" disk drivers?
I had similar probs a while back and had to make a startup disk to get the drivers for the HD and cd drive.

Just a guess :)

I said it was a guess.

Maybe maybe not, try putting the exact wording of the error message in google.

I do like to try and fix it myself first before asking

Cheers though :)

IDE devices not detected :P

You know when you boot up and its meant to list them? Well it isn't, I have falshed the bios and also tried to get it to detect them from in there but its not happening

If you can't find the answer there, open the cd drive, then open a tin of spam and squeeze it in, then push cd drive shut and pour tomatoe sauce over the puter and throw it out teh window :01: :P

I just asked a mate who knows a bit more about ths than me (no he's not a monkey :P ) he said "Feck knows, sounds like someones been fiddling with the BIOS"

Hope you get it sorted :01:

Updating the bios didn't help. Bah, this pc worked fine when I last used it

k,

Try this: Check all the connectiors are the way they spose to be, and coonected properly,
infact, check all the cables in the box, just in case. Reboot and see what happens.

If it dont help, reboot to Bios,
Load the Default Settings for Bios, reboot and see what happens, if it dont help, shut down PC and take off power cable,
then reset CMOS usually by jumper, check the manual where it is, if you dont have one, download it.
Then boot to Bios and Load the Defaults again, then reboot and see what happens.

Or, you could try some dos tools to check what infos you get out of hardware.

That's the way I would start atleast....

What stupid sod put single settings on the jumpers?

I just thought having it as master as it was on its own would be the right thing to do :blushing:

Best part of 3 hours I have spent fretting over it

Hehe, nice you got it sorted.

Been cussing those jumpers on HDD's meself also.
And then we have partitions like Logical etc...

I read and read but the data does not compute, hah.

Both drive on independant IDE cables? Check the jumpers on the drives. Some drives have settings for 'single drive' and won't work if not set to single.

In the BIOS... Set it to 'Auto' or go into the section that is for 'detecting' and let it do that. If that doesn't work then you'll have to set the drives manually (#cyls, #sec. etc.)

Edit: Forget my post. I missed the second page altogether. :blushing: :whistling

Check the boot sequence in the BIOS. Put the CD drive before the HDDs.

Is it unattended, slipstreamed Windows, XP?

I'd use WinIso or something to extract the Windows cd to folder somewhere and
tweak it with nLite:

I got another problem now though.

Put my 2nd hard drive into it now and although its picking it up right and showing it in device manager its not actually displaying it in my computer?

(Learned that from VB) lol

Does it have to be reformatted?

Does it have to be reformatted?
If you reformat it then the data will be unavailable. If there is data on the drive that you want then I think you need to manually set the #cyls, #sects etc. to be the same as they were in the previous computer.

That sounds confusing. I amanged to get it to work with a highly techinical method, I took it back out and put it back as it was, rebooted, turned it off then put it in again and rebooted and it showed up, pity it didn't the first couple of times

What I thought we take me 30mins today has taken abslolutely hours :frusty:

Cheers for the help everyone :D
