So yeah, I downloaded this program once, and it was cool, I started sharing my shit and some guy comes in and he somehow knows my name, all I shared is one folder. This scared me and I uninstalled the program. I want to get it again, but I don't want the same thing to happen. Does anyone know how I can protect my identity and tell me what I've doen wrong?

You probably did not set up your sharing configuration up properly and more than likely shared everything on your computer.

"...somehow knows my name?.."
Know your name or just the Username?
I wouldnt use any real information about me on anything in my PC.
Good rule of thumb is, Lie as much as possible regarding Userinfos, its not Illegal.
And, it's bound to leak out somehow, thanks to M$ and all other
software that just has to keep track what im doing.

Do a regular search on your Windows box and there's a packet leaving to M$.
Im talking about searching a file in your HD.
Think about that.

Also, anyone downloading anything from you gets your IP addy, p2p app or not,
and that could be used to get more information about you.

Ever heard of Whois search?

Infact, I see your IP on the board, I could start searcing info with that.
Depending if you have use Proxys, I could find something about you...

Better go get the Tin Foil Hat.

If you want 100% security over Internet, dont use it.
