I have Windows ME (yuk) and have noticed that my hard disk is getting very full. I now have less than 1 meg on my 20 meg drive.

It seems that System Restore is taking a lot of my space 2 megs out of 20meg as when I run AVG anti virus checker I can see lots of files in the Restore\Temp\folders.

But Windows Explorer will not let me access these folders as they are hidden and I am prevented from unhiding them.

I went to Control Panel\System\Performance\File System and there was a slider from Min to Max for the System Restore files. It was on 2.75meg (max) so I moved it to just over Min at .80 meg, thinking this would help.

But there was still the same amount of hard drive space left.

I have re-booted with no luck and I have run Windows\Accessories\System Tools\Disk Clean Up with no luck. And Scan Disk.

Does any one know how I can erase the Restore\Temp\Files they have an extension of CPY (I think)

I have consulted Windows Help on System Restore but does not cover this situation.

Are there are turiorls anywhere on this ?

Thanks

I have an idea if u want to get as much space as possible

First, turn off System Restore (i've forgotten how in WinME)
Once u've applied the settings, goto ur C:, delete the whole System Restore folder

Then, turn System Restore back on, with the minimum settings
Finally, make a new restore point.

Yes just disable system resotre to get your space back.

if you want it enabled then enable it again and it should have cleared all of the old system restore pooiints.

and it's not megs, it's gb(gigabyte).

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies.

But how do I disable System restore in ME ? I have looked all over.

Yes its gigs, (I am an old DOS man and a meg was quite a bit then !) I used to sell PC's back in the mid 80's when the average hard drive size was 20 meg ! and 40 meg drives were available. And I used to tell my customers that they would NEVER fill their 20 meg drives (just using word processing and accounting programs) which was true. Now you could only put 3 songs on it !

I have just found out how to disable System restore in ME.

You do it in Control Panel>System>Performance>File System>Trouble Shooting then there is a check box to disable it.

I have now done this, but I have not got my 2 gigs back yet, despite re-booting several times.

As I said I can see the files via AVG anti virus and a Norton Utitlity I have, but Windows will not let me access them to delete them.

Any suggestions please ?

Well, I dont know much about ME so much, except it is regarded as Teh Suck OS,
but i guess we all know that.
:P

I got a friend who had the ME some time ago and had some problems with it.
We fixed it by moving to XP.

Now to your problem.

To remove the System Restore folders and the files/folders that takes up the Space:

I would plug out the Net cable, disable all the Antiviris and such tools,
then get me the priviledges to see all the system files ie. take off the
possible limitations what ME can do to access the files.

Then, I would try to move the files manually.
Or, boot to Safe Mode and try to remove from there.
If that dont help, I would boot with my special BootCD which has the WinPE
and remove the files rom there.

If that dont help, I would swear a lot, remove the damn ME and install XP.
Or better yet, Linux.
(Actually, i would change the OS allready but maybe thats not an option for you)
:D

Thats what I can think of atm.

Yes ME sux and I'd like to get XP, but can't afford it just yet.

I have thought about a d/l copy but do they work and are they complete ?

But to get back to my CPY files in the Restore\Temp folder I tried Safe Mode and Windows will still not let me access these folders !

There must be a way.

i dun think u can do anything with them as long as u have System Restore on.
to turn it off, http://www.pchell.com/virus/systemrestore.shtml
hope that helps

btw, if u wanna download a copy of winxp, i suggest that u go to a reputable/verified website.
depending on wat filesharing software ur gonna use, it always have such websites dedicated to releasing verified stuff.

Thanks Gildan I have turned System restore off (as per the tutorial) but I still cannot access the Retsore\Temp folder.

This really sucks.

I have emailed Mircro$0ft in case their techs can tell me how.

It is my hard drive and I want it all ! 3 gigs out of 20 !

PS There must be some utility that will let me in there. I consider myself an intermediate user when it comes to OS's etc. But this has got me stumped.

Thanks guys

I have just fixed my problem and got my 3 gigs back.

I did it through the Dos prompt !

By carefully typing the folder names CD\ _Restore\Temp

The folder name came up ! and I could do a DIR of all the CPY files and then I deleted them. They were no longer hidden !

Lucky I am an old Doshead !
