Just a thought, I noticed 7 guests veiwing Filesharing.
I wonder if it would be an idea to make Information forums unviewable to guests. This would mean if they want the info they have to join, therefore bringing more members in, maybe some of them would stay :)

No because the idea is that the forums will come up on google searches then guests click the link and they come to our forum. :)

krohn implemented this i think. but it was a good idea imo.

The forums will still come up on google searches if you give the spiders member permissions or set a new group for them.
The cached link will also take them to the page thru the lock, but they will only be able to view that page, they might then think "I need to know more" and then join.
If someone is too lazy to join a free forum to get some free info then it's their problem.

People keep moaning about how we don't get new members, well all guests are potential new members and if what they are looking for is only accessible by joining then some might.

There is a hack available to allow the forum to be on view but not accessable.

It's what I've done on my place and so far it's worked, people get one page and want to see the next so they join :)

I prefer open forums to closed forums.

If I find that a forum is helpful or entertaining I'll lurk for a while and then maybe join. Most times when I encounter a closed forum I press the back button and go look for information elsewhere.

The average attention span of someone on the internet is

I agree with this too. This forum was an open forum before I joined. I signed in as a guest for a few months before I joined

Usually if I am searching for something and the forum tells me I need to log in to view the post I will just go to another forum. A lot of people like to browse around and get a feel for the place before registering.

I did'nt say lock the forum down, I said lock information forums, such as those which members here have spent their time making tuition threads etc.

Just a thought anyway, doesn't bother me, just had a thought :)

That has the same effect.

I tend to remember sites that have been useful, so even if I didn't join up the first time I'm more likely to go back if I've got a similar problem. Also, remember that from Brian's point of view he needs traffic, not necessarily members, although I believe one will bring the other.

Two oddities:

The first is that the Poll section is not visible to guests. It's not like many people are going to be enticed to join up because of the awesome topics contained within but I thought I'd mention it because I don't think it's intentional.

Also When a guest clicks on the verified section he sees the message that there have been no posts in the verifieds in the last 100 days.

This is clearly undesirable as it would put people off joining. I think it should be fixed as soon as possible and replaced with a big red

'forbidden to non-members'

notice.

This issue has probably discouraged several people from joining already. Please could it be fixed. Thanks.

@Manker..... Good job the poll section is closed cos having read thru it, it's just another lounge with polls

And maybe that message would be better if it simply said "Please Log in /Register as oposed to your idea which might as well say "You ain't a member so fuck off" :frusty:

Just my opinion of course :)

Do we even need to let guests see sections if they can't view the contents? If we make them invisible (like Team areas are to regular members) they won't be offended by messages or leave thinking there's no action.

And if you make the bit about hidden sections more noticeable (in bold, or maybe in red) it may intrigue them and get them to join.

I think lynx has got it about right, the hidden sections being in red would intruige people to register -- what you've done so far is good also, IKE, I reckon ;)

Jonno, your opinion about forum management will become more valid to me and others when your own forum doesn't resemble a deserted train wreck. K.

Don't see why that was neccesary, insults are the lowest for of wit.
I did'nt insult you, why insult me.

And you wonder why people leave or don't join up.

Yeah, I insulted your capacity for running a forum that attracts members because your own forum does not yet you saw fit to contradict me - it was pertinent to the discussion.

My wit is average but thanks for the concern ;)

I don't think the verified sections should be hidden. The contents yes, but not the sections. If visitors see that we have verifieds but cannot view them then they would be encouraged to join.

I will make them visible as soon as I know how to change the message, so it will say something like: you need to sign up to see this section....

or...

I add a line to the description of the verified sections so it would look something like this:

Post verified movies and TV episodes here.
You need to be logged in/registrated to view this forum
