It doesn't seem like anyone is taking it upon themselves to suggest a free skin. I did some searching and only managed to find skins that are forsale, and most were terrible.

What i want to do is to try and create some alternate skins just by changing the colors and fonts. Does anyone who is familar with VB know where to start?

You work in the "Style Manager". Download the defult style (Download / Upload Styles) and reupload (it will be a .xml file) it to give you a skin to work with (without messing around with the one members are viewing).

Then just use the drop down box in the style manager to perform colour changes to the test skin.

The outline thats on now looks horrible.

Please remove it.

It looks like average joe vb forum now.

Ok we have Black, green, brown.

Any other ideas?

If you look you all have an option in the lower left corner to select a different skin. Dont worry I was just testing it out.

How about we keep the default one being the one we have been using. Make a new "dark" version with dark blue. Maybe even another "Xmas" one that could be changed to different holidays at other times of the year.

Let us choose to view the board with the skin we want.

Make a simple skin with white letter on black background.

1. The default skin looks funny with those borders that were added.

2. the new one isn't too bad but the red borders look awful. maybe the background should be dark blue instead of this grey color...

Ok I added the Green/Brown style. Let me know what you think. I admit it's not the best thing I've seen. I'll try and do a few more if you guys give me some type of color scheme.

Take the default skin.
Make the background behind post a dark blueish-grey color, and make the text white.
and the background behind our name+avatar and all that should be an even darker blue. test here white too.
The background behind the whole forum can be black or dark grey or something.

The problem with changing the background of the main forum is that the logo and google adds look terrible on anything besides white.

If you can change the URL for the logo image then here are a few you could try:

Creamy color (http://rossco.pinecurtain.net/temp/fst/logos/logo_cream.gif) for the default skin.
White (http://rossco.pinecurtain.net/temp/fst/logos/logo_white.gif) for any white background skins.
Black (http://rossco.pinecurtain.net/temp/fst/logos/logo_black.gif) for black background skins.
Transparent (http://rossco.pinecurtain.net/temp/fst/logos/logo_transparent.gif) one you can try...

If you need more they're easy to change the background of.

Thanks for this, Brian.

The skins I liked there are:

Ambience.
Synapse.
Imagize.

I didn't like the side bars on the skins at all, but they're optional - aren't they

rookiecrd1

no thats the problem, the side cards come with the skin. I only saw one that displayed the entire page.

Damn, in that case I didn't like any of them :(

I seem to remember the old IPB skin having sidebars but them being removed when people asked for them to be gone. I assumed it would be the same with a VB skin.

Think I'll have a look on the sites 15% and Vivitron suggested.
