I wasn't sure where to put this but since it's hardware I'll throw it here. Can be moved if need be...

"Take a close look at the DS screen, pretty nice yeah?"

However, if PSP is beside the DS...

Now, we've turned the PSP's screen to the lowest brightness. The DS can now match up.

"And the following photos were taken of the hightest brightness of DS and PSP. The three photos were taken at normal light, dark, and side."

PSP storms Japan

Lines start to move and cash registers start to ring as Sony officially enters the handheld gaming market.

TOKYO--It all started just before dawn in Tokyo's Shinjuku district. At 6AM, the popular game store known as Yodobashi Camera opened early, counted down the final minute, and fired streamers into the air. Ken Kutaragi and other Sony executives donned Yodobashi uniforms and happily sold the store's first PSP to a young man who was quickly mobbed by reporters. The reporters interviewed and filmed him as he opened the box and showed off the unit for the cameras.

Like many other major retailers in Japan, Yodobashi did not take PSP pre-orders ahead of time. As a result, over 1,200 hopeful game fans lined up throughout the long, cold night, some taking up their position as early as 3PM the previous day. By the time the store opened, the quiet crowd snaked around two blocks. Interestingly enough, the line at this particular store seemed to continue growing even after the store started selling the PSP, the six launch games, and other assorted accessories. With overall supplies for Japan said to be in the neighborhood of 200,000 PSPs, it seems almost certain that this initial stock will disappear quickly.

The PSP is available in two configurations. One is a system-only package, while a "value pack" includes many of the available accessories, such as a pair of headphones with remote, a 32MB memory stick duo, and a slim carrying case. Sony is also selling AC adapters (though, obviously, both packages come with one already) and additional batteries. Third-parties are already selling thin pieces of plastic film that are intended to protect the screen from scratches.

Stay tuned to GameSpot for more news and preview information on the PSP as we put the final retail unit and its launch lineup through its paces.

It's gonna be the nVidia vs ATI wars all over

If you want to get the flash crap, stick with the PSP - Hopefully in its effort to be a full media experience it'll remember that the original concept was to be a handheld GAMING machine.

As for the DS, I'll stick with it - I've had a go on one recently and I'm already loving the wireless play

tft is an expensive gimmick though

i'm the sort of person with more money than sense when it comes to gaming so i'll eventually get both even though the PSP will probably be strictly GTA and divx

Remember PSP uses those lil discs so all your current movies/albums and other stuff you will have to re-buy in UDF discs, so why buy the same movie twice jusxt to watch it in a train?

Also companies are gonna look at it like this (becuase the PSP has about the same graphics as PS2) :

Make a game for a system that already has millions apon millions of owners and have hardly any risk or not selling. Or make a game on a handheld system tha will cost us the same ammount to make and very new.
Face it PSP is Sony's new money machine, its not about letting you watch DivX, its abou selling UDF discs

And the DS looks like it came from the 80's. I aint going to be geting either.

My friend looked into this (as his parents were going out there and he wanted to get one)

And im pritty sure Nintendo have not region locked them, Sony HAVE region locked PSP however.

Mr. Elmo
12-12-2004, 05:09 PM
sony only have region locked on movies/audio. you can play US psp games on a Jap psp unit and vice versa

TheDave
12-12-2004, 05:19 PM
Nintendo has officially confirmed that the Nintendo DS will be region-free, allowing it to play games purchased anywhere in the world. Although this news may not specifically cater to American and Japanese folks, it certainly gives us Europeans the benefit of importing our DS systems from abroad, with the help of import specialist sites such as Lik-Sang.com. Mr. Elmo

obviously the part about the psp being region free for games in my post was ignored.

who cares if the psp is region lock on movies/media...the ds can't even play movies on its own

TheDave
12-12-2004, 05:45 PM
i clicked reply before that and hi resolution doesn't beat good games.

if i want a portable dvd player i could buy a portable dvd player for half the price (probably less) than a psp

Mr. Elmo
12-12-2004, 06:03 PM
good games depends on the gamers taste. i personally find the games on the DS right now aimed toward younger gamers and classic gamers. but like i said, its my opinion. i am more into the shooter/rpg that ps/ps2 have produced over the years. i also liked the rpg that the gba has for its collection. but when it boil down to hardware, the PSP > DS.

but like you said, what makes a system is its collection of games, and that will all depends on the gamers own personal preference.

and here is a quote from ign

Will I be able to import games or other multimedia releases from other countries to play on my PSP?

Yes and no -- you will be able to play games on a PSP from any country, but you may not be able to play all types of PSP media. The PSP UMD format is fully equipped with region encoding procedures on all formats published to the media -- games, movies and music. However, Sony Computer Entertainment has chosen not to use the region encoding system on videogame titles. Importers should exercise caution in purchasing products from other countries, but import gaming fans will be able to play games from other countries on PSP.

Please note that, the DS's screen is NOT this dark (please see the very first photo), just because if the we take the photo as the original brightness and contrast (of the digital camera, not the consoles), the PSP's screen will be too bright.

So yeah, I personally reckon the PSP's screen is much better than the DS. But once again, we all know that game play is everything, not just the screen.

i'm tempted to order it right now. but i'm saving for a DS  If the DS is backward GBA compatable (can't remember if it is or not) then i would get one of those Flash cards. Like he 128mb ones, that way you could fit like 6-10 games onto one cart, be able to delete them and get games for free. i'd wai a bit for he movie player hough, as the only movies and tv eps i got were Yo Gi Ho or some Anime stuff, no full movies....and he GBA speakers/sound sint good enough to do real audio i wouldnt have though.

However it was only $24.99 or somethjing which works out at about £12.50.

My friends parents have only been able o get 1 DS and 0 PSP's so far. the DS was gotten from some little shop and was a display model that had been in he window 3 days, was sill boxed and like new. They have offered up to £50 just to ge a PSP from most shops but theres to much demand. Doubt you will get it this side of christmas.

lik-sang says 7-30 working days airmail so if i was really really really lucky to get one. in my experience delivery companies like to get stuff to me the day after the deadline.

it says UPS delivery takes 1-3 days but i presume thats a mistake left from the US order forms. on the FAQ though it reccomends UPS for global delivery because of order tracking... ow my brain :(

sounds delightful. :P

also... FOR PETE'S SAKE the people designing games for PSP seem to be putting no thought whatsoever into what kind of game actually works well on a portable system. were fans actually beating the door down, demanding to play DYNASTY WARRIORS and DARKSTALKERS on a 4" screen?

PSP battery depends on what you use it for and what brightness settings. On its lowest brightness. its equal to a GBA:SP, and users around the net find it to last 8-9 hours...some even 10hours before batteried died.

whats wrong with dynasty warrior and Dark stalker on a 4inch screen? it surely isnt worst than metroid prime or any fighting game on the nintendo DS or the gba.

TheDave
12-15-2004, 04:33 AM
flashy effects and retina blur and stuff are often confusing on a big screen, it's gonna be hell on a 3 inch one. oh yeah, metroid prime with fps controls to rival a pc game = better than sex
