i seached and couldn't find a topic about this, so sorry if theres one around.

i was looking around ebay at iPods and whatnot, and i discovered that they're insanely expensive. does anyone know of some good mp3 players that can hold a few thousand songs and still do good for battery life, features, easy of use etc.?

i'm thinking of a $200 ceiling to spend. thanks.

philips hd060
very small, very cool white colour, can get about 700 tracks on it (not bad considering its 1,5GB (i think). Very good sound quality, cool back light. Not sure on price but around $110 i think, look around as loads of sites were doing special offers a while back on them as philips had just bought out a bigger version.
Oh and if no one noticed (bastards) i have been away for 3 months. Nice to see the old faces are here, the moaners are still moaning and this is still here :01: !!!

iPods4less.com (http://ipods4less.com/) has the 15GB iPod for $199. It doesn't come with any accesories, so just add the firewire cable for $15 and you're good to go.

Was it beer?

I just wasted all the money I had set aside for a new gfx card on beer...:(

I reckon all the mp3 players will go down in price after christmas anyhow, probably save yourself a bit.

i'm not really looking to play cd's at all. i am liking the mp3 player idea cuz they are so small and can be carried easily in your pocket. try that with a cd player man. and the thought of carrying however many discs i would need to keep my thousands of songs. mp3 player would allow me to constantly add/change whats on it, as well as some room to spare.

right now i have a little over 4000 mp3s on my puter worth about 16.4GB.

thanks for the suggestions everyone! i'll be looking into a few ya mentioned.:D

I'd say get the Creative Zen... IMO ipods are way to over rated

well it pretty much comes down to iPod vs. Creative Zen.

creative zen:
30GB - $219
battery time - 14-24 hrs
size: bigger

ipod:
20GB - ~$280 from ipods4less.com ( not sure exactly, they're out atm )
battery time - 12 hrs
size: smaller

i dunno. the ipod is a little more expensive, but its smaller. the software for the creative zen looked a little shady. there are more accessories for the ipod.

anyone had experience/problems with these 2 players?

I have a 40GB iPod. It's a great pieve of hardware... Easy to use.

The Creative Zen software is utter crap. I know 2 people who have creative players, and they both have constant problems. Device not recognized, freeze during tranfers, etc. My recommendation: Stay away. There's a reason iPods are expensive, yet so popular. They just plain work good.

I'm not sure about sound quality between the two.
Depends if you're on a budget.

I found the iPod wayy cooler than the creative. I tried both and iPod is way easier to use too. :)

But it's personal preference and im not sure about sound quality of the creative, but iPod is AWSOME sound quality. :D

I sugest to just get a cd player that plays mp3s. Meh, its what I do. My cd player does CDR, CDRW, MP3, AM, FM, TV, and WB. ;) Then just carry the cds. Its not that bad. Three cds is already over 2 gigs of music. And since you can play cdr and cdrw, you can always add songs and delete songs.

size is still an issue, and carrying cd's? i dont wanna carry a backpack & cd's can get scratched. 2gb? i need 16gb+ :P my collection would easily take up to 25 cds.

scratch the freeipods.com idea. i read the topic here about it, and it didn't seem to well, plus i missed the part about "refer-your-friends."

the iPod is seeming the way to go though.

quick question to those that own one: is there some kind of "keyguard" like on cellphone for the ipod? so that when its in my pocket i dont jack the volume up fast or jump 50 tracks ahead?

iPod has a hold switch on the top just like on most cd players. :)

Ross: As you have an iPod you can answer this question for me, save me looking up on Google.

Can an iPod hold other types of files? Like a avi file for instance or a game. (Obviously not play them but to transport them from computer to computer...)

Yea, but most require special software to navigate the player. The iPod is recognized by windows as a "removable disk". It get's a driver letter in My Computer and everything. Drag-and-drop, baby.

Creative players require Nomad Navigator. (a.k.a. POS software)

The refer your friends is probably the easiest thing. Just reregister using that key they give you. THey probably check for IP addresses so go find some computer in the library, on campus, in a cafe for something. Just use mailinator addresses and ur set. You just need a credit card to fill the last part out. Signing up for one of the ads. ;)

like?
You're just paying more for the useless features that you can get with cheap addons to the iPod.
Such as the iTrip for radio.

Plus the iRiver is hella ugly.

I only did the 80 tracks in 2 min, cause thats all i had at the time. I stated this cause my old RCA mp3 player would have taken more than 20 min.

The $330 for the IRIVER 20 gb included a replacement warrenty.

Also I passed on IPOD because you can only download from their site. (that's what the sales chick said)
I got the 20gb, it does everything except play video.

I also like to put each cd in its own folder ,then drag from my music folder to the player, no need for musicmatch, WINAMP, or WMP.

Ok, but I assume you already use one of those media players to manage and listen to all your music. So why would it be an inconvenience to use it to sync your MP3 Player? (iPod supports all three, along with iTunes and Realplayer.)
