Virus problems

So, there's a virus on my friends computer. Trend Micro online scan doesn't catch it. I have Autorestore turned off, but It keeps coming back. I'm assuming it's because I'm not deleting every location of the virus so it's just copying itself again.

There are 7 versions of it that show up in my shared folder, a few more in system32. They don't show up in the folder most of the time, but they always appear in this shortcut program I use called H-menu.

Without the scan picking it up as a virus, I have no idea where else it is located.

Open Task Manger and find if it's resident in his memory.

If it is, end the process, and delete all the files you know where they are located.

Run AV (A decent one which is updated. Trend Micro sucks, so get a decent one.)

Reboot in Safe Mode. Scan with AV once more and let us know if it's still there.

I have no idea what the name of it is. Some of the files are

_nero_6.6_keygen.exe
_winrar_v3.41_final_crack.exe

I've always used Trend Micro, is there a better free prog out there?

What P2P Client did he/you use to download these files from?

Do you/he know anything about verifieds?

What (if anything) has the AV reported?

Considering that you (or he) is d/l illegal files anyway, does it matter?

Anway, Norton SystemWorks 2005, Nod32 or Kaspersky should def find the virii.

he used kazaa. I believe he got it when he was trying to download winrar. He didn't know about verifieds. The virus scan congratulates him for having no viruses.

Free as in you don't have to pay to have updated virus definitions.

I'll work on getting one of those. (wasn't NOD32 made by one of the old programmers here? It sounds familiar.)

I use Norton SystemWorks 2005.

Ditch Kazaa. That's the reason the PC is infected. Is a firewall running on the PC as well?

Use eMule Plus.

yeah, I'm a kazaa addict. I just can't seem to break away from it. I've tried other stuff but I always go back to kazaa. I also use bittorent through shareazza.

Imo Avast! home edition is the best free AV for personal use.

I use to use to be an avid user of AVG. One problem with it I noticed was it did not always take action on some of the viruses found. After reading up on it I found that others said the same. So I switched to Kaspersky, almost daily updates. :01:
