Hello forum

I'm mainly a klite user, however I thought I 'd give bitorrent a go as it recenlty made the news headlines.

After skimming through a few tutorials, it seems bitorrent works in a different way to Kazaa in that it does not have a program window in which you work in. You have to go to different bitorrent sites and download from there.

Once I finally came round to this concept, I tried my first download. Yet I was unable to proceed as I keep on getting redirected to Mr Cohen's site for a donation...

Is this normal, or am I falling foul of some corporation?

This isn't normal for a site to keep asking you to donate to Bram Cohen, although that is nice and all.

Now the question is are you trying to download the BitTorrent Client or an actually torrent?

If you're looking for a client among the popular ones are:
http://azureus.sourceforge.net/ <--- Java based client
http://bittornado.com/
and I've always liked http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/ , Although I think Azureus is the same thing, I've had the chance to use it.

If you're looking for actual torrents I don't know all too many sites, you should search around the forums but www.suprnova.org is probably the most popular still. If you can manage to sign up Filelist.org and Torrentbits.org are probably also good, but as I said search the forums or someone else give a better list.

Yeah thanks guys

Basically I downloaded Bit Torrent-3.4.2 and then installed it. I expected a kazaa look a like program, but istead I've just a bitorrent folder in my program files - is this the client? Everytime I execute this file it takes me to Bram Cohens site.

So I thought I better go to a Torrent hosting website to see if I could actually download some files. I went to this site http://www.orsys-network.tk/ from the list on the forum (the one RealitY has quoted). Tried to download a movie and got redirected back to Mr Cohens home page for donation.

Has the latest Bitorrent got a donation bug? I dont know, maybe I need an older version (I'm assuming what I installed is the client program? - be gentle Im new to this!).

Please dont use the original BitTorrent application it is a piece of crap:

:D

Instead I would recomend my fave client G3 Torrent or Azureus that Is a Java app which I dont like as much as G3 due to heavy system load and therefore prefers G3 but it is also a good client. They are both packed with functions such as download of individual files from torrents with multiple files and making a new torrent from within the program and they have a real GUI etc etc

G3 Torrent:

http://g3torrent.sourceforge.net/

And now to the good stuff:

  :01: :w00t:

For movies, apps, etc I recommend TorrentSpy which is a site that indexes Torrents from other Trackers:

http://www.torrentspy.com (http://www.torrentspy.com/)

Also I would like to recommend Pirate Bay the worlds largest Tracker which is Swedish:

http://thepiratebay.org/frame.html

And for the Juicy hot stuff I recommend PureTNA:

http://www.puretna.com (http://www.puretna.com/)  :01: :1eye:

Hope You liked my tips!!

Here's a quick guide that I could have worked out when I first started using bittorrent, hope it helps you.:)

Uninstall the version you installed first, now here's the guide.

1. Go to http://www.bittornado.com/download.html click any mirror 1-4, download and install bittornado, that's the client installed, don't try to do anything with it cos you can't, only clicking on a torrent activates it.

2. Go to http://www.suprnova.org/ click the Search button, type kaspersky into the first box and click search, when the next window comes up click on this one; "antivirus kaspersky 5.0.149.4 + key" a box will pop up asking where to save it, tell it where and click Save, this should start your download, kaspersky is just an example but try it cos I know it works and will give you the basic idea of how to use bittorrent.

Happy downloading.:D :D :D

Thanks for the advice everyone

I've now uninstalled BitTorrent and downloaded both G3 and Bittornado - will be checking them out. Slowly but surely this Bittorrent lark is becoming a little clearer to me.

Interesting use of pictures Joakim, very artistic lol
