You can try CamStudio, it is free and you can record to swf or avi

What you trying to capture camcorder, TV or from dvd's? windows own movie maker 2 is quite good these days but you'll need some other software like tmpgenc+ and dvd author to put on disc, if its dvds u want to capture from auto gordion knot is bang on aswell.
