I have an Internet conection via CableCompany, and I even have one of those ¨cable modems¨ that is used to conect the ¨coaxia video like¨ cable and from there to the PC using a diferent cable (like telephone jack but bigger).

Everytime I run a BandWidth test, it gives me from 200 to 250kbps, so, its fine, its fine to download music at 30 or 35kbps, but since im not getting those unvelivable speeds of 100kbps with bittorrent,
I was wondering, is it posible that my bandwith is not real, or is there a factor that Im not aware with Cable?

250kbps = 31.25kByte/s so the speed you get is fine.

In the end the speed you'll get depends on the ISP and what you pay for.
I guess you have a 256Kb/s connection so you wont get faster speeds than 32KB/s

Oooooh!

o my god...
Well, thatnk for the hint Benno, im not blind anymore.

I have that same speed.

You basically jsut take what your ISP says your speed is (kbps OR mbps) then devide by 8.

256/8 = 32kB/s :)

little b = bits.
big B = bytes.
8bits = 1byte. :)

Yes ¨rossco¨, I knew that (bits n bites thing), but I had never understood the internet speed, well, at least not the correct way.

And ¨Reality¨, sadly here in Mexico (Tijuana) they take advantage of the little competence they have, so I pay $360.00 Pesos (montly)($32 US Dlls) for the 256kb conection by Cable.

Do you have any advice ?

I pay less than that for my 4mb/512K, my advice is to move I guess...

Humm, naaa I´ll pass on that.
It seems like too much truble and riski,
may be if it were easier.

Its doable but will really piss off your ISP if they find out...

I know someone who uncapped thier modem to do 12mb both up and down. But he capped it again incase ISP found out. I have the tool kit he used oon my pc if anyone wants.

peerzi, did you get the PM?

Peerzy

Yes i got it, and i got N18's aabout 30 pm's and a few others. Jus to let you know most ISP's can detect the second you uncap your modem. And its highly illligal, sent the prision illigal type.

If you still wan o go hrough pm me again.

Hey Peerzy,
I´ve tryed it already, using OneStep but its just too dificult, the guide that comes with it doesn´t tell you anything.

Just out of interest - what does it mean to "uncap" a modem?

You are lucky, normally (at least here) you can't get more than the max speed, but you seldom reach that as the net is usually slightly strained and thus slower for individual users. For instance, I'm supposed to have 8Mbit, but I usually don't get more than seven or so.

8Mbit down 800k up, on spec.

About £35 per month, it's gotten more expensive than it used to. :s

I think britain is different when it comes to these things.
Anyhow, it used to be cheaper.

Funny thing is that 2, 4 and 8Mbit connections used to cost the same from this isp in this area, not sure if that's the case now tho'.
