Dunno if it's old news or not

Publisher confirms an adaptation of the classic Francis Ford Coppola films, and it will likely be M-rated.

Hoping to cash in on the popularity of the crime genre, Electronic Arts is going to make gamers an offer they (probably) won't be able to refuse--an adult-targeted game based on the classic Godfather film franchise.

News of the Godfather game came from EA's Chief Financial Officer Warren Jensen, who was speaking at the 17th Annual Bear Stearns Media, Entertainment, & Information Conference in Palm Beach, Florida. "I think that many of you know that we are developing The Godfather," he told a crowd at the event. While he did not reveal a release date for the game, Jensen did say it "will likely be an M-rated game."

While Jensen's comments sounded off-the-cuff, EA's move into M-rated games would send shock waves through the industry. Unlike Take-Two, which has made M-rated titles like Grand Theft Auto and Mafia its bread and butter, EA has consistently avoided controversy with more mainstream offerings. Besides its library of E-rated sports best-sellers (Madden NFL 2004, NFL Street, SSX 3), the publisher has long specialized in titles with the "T" for Teen label (Medal of Honor Rising Sun, Battlefield 1942, The Sims, Command & Conquer: Generals).

During a panel at the recent D.I.C.E. summit in Las Vegas, Wedbush Morgan Securities' game analyst Michael Pachter said an EA entry into the M-rated market would further cement its place as the world's top publisher. "God save us if EA wakes up and wants to make mature content," he said. "If that happens, there's only going to be one company [left]."

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, The Godfather film trilogy traced the violent rise and fall of American mafioso Michael Corleone, played by Al Pacino. The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II both won Academy Awards for Best Picture and remain two of the most popular and critically acclaimed films of all time. A Godfather game would join EA's extensive catalog of movie-based games, which includes James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, among others.

When Electronic Arts announced it was adapting The Godfather last year, many cinephiles wondered how the operatic mafia drama would translate into a game. Then this year, it was revealed that Robert Duvall, James Caan, and the late Marlon Brando had all recorded voice-overs for it. The involvement of the stars gave the project a big boost in the credibility department, raising hopes for the game.

Now, however, the man primarily responsible for The Godfather film is speaking out against the Godfather game. According to several wire services, writer-director Francis Ford Coppola expressed his displeasure with Paramount Pictures for selling off the game rights on the American Movie Classics cable network show Sunday Morning ShootOut.

"I knew nothing about it. They never asked me if I thought it was a good idea," he reportedly said. His ire was further riled when he was given a preview build of the game by EA. "They use the characters everyone knows, and then for the next hour they shoot and kill each other. I had absolutely nothing to do with the game, and I disapprove," he was quoted as saying.

The Godfather game is slated for a fourth quarter 2005 release for the PC, PSP, Xbox, and PlayStation 2. EA, its developer and publisher, has said it will be rated "M" for Mature. GameSpot's previous coverage has more information on the film adaptation.

oh come on now gepper, everyone knows EA sucks big time. they're known for releasing shit quality games that never see any updates. only good game i could possibly think of at this moment is NFSU2 (which has it's many many glitches) and Battlefield 1942. that's about it. and the only reason i (as well as many other ppl) liked godfather is because it involved more than shooting the crap out of each other, that's not what godfather was about.

ok then, name some great games made by EA, and post some scores of those games from trusted game sites. :) i know art and masterpieces when i see it, and i can certainly say EA is after money and they dont give 2 shits about the consumers and what they like.

edit: MOHAA, that's number 3 to add to the list of "good" games released by EA. (not the MOH series, anything after MOHAA sucks big time)

EA is a publisher not a developer. they release shit games and buy there developers shit licenses and force them to rush. occasionally we get a good game.

i reckon it's a two tier tactic of there's. 80% of the games are colourful shite aimed at teenie boppers and parents, no real effort just a names and advertising.
20% of the games are really worked on. aimed at the proper gamer, delays are acceptable and it sells off gameplay.

maybe anyway

EA did release the masterpeice known as BF1942, but they neglected to fix the retarded ai with any patch.

They didnt release a SDK for either bf42 or bfv, and i doubt highly they will gor bf2.

They abandoned 42 once bfv came out, and bfv has been abandoned.

EA are corperate assholes, they dont care about the consumer, they just care about money.

GepperRankins
04-11-2005, 06:50 AM
yeah, the battlefield series would probably be better under a different publisher.

when battlefield vietnam came out there was a poll saying would you buy the game if there was no AI so i expect BF2 wont have any at all

if you watch the interviews at gamespot or gametrailers, the dude says there will be an SDK released before the game is available

the delays are promising though :D

C & C Generals was good until they decide to abandon it despite the many glaring issues, not the least of them being the lack of any sort of anti cheat facilities abart from dodgy community mods that are easily bypassed.

In summary, if EA doesn't think they can squeeze some extra money out of people by doing something, they won't do it.

Ea wont release a proper SDK for BF2, they just release a bunch of stuff that makes making minimods easier.

A map maker, a .con editer, a special effect editor. What they need to do is stop being money-grubing assholes and release a real and proper SDK so modders can add keys, and make a real FULL modification.

More people play BF1942 than BF:V because it was crap.

Further proof that EA just wants money is those two excuses for expantion packs it released for BF1942, and the fact that the day BF:V came out, the patches for BF42 stoped.

Its real sad that BF1942 has been out for 5 years now, but non of the mods out for it are true "full conversions" because they lack the tooks to animate, and other petty bullshit that ea wont help the community with.

Yes BF2 mite be ok, EA has said that the AI has been overhauled, but as for modding is concerned: It most likely will be limited like in the past two releases.

I just dont understand why, with the BF1942 title alone i bet there has been 10,000+ emails sent to EA for a SDK and real modding tools, but they wont budge.

Oh, and i heard that CTF wont be supported when BF2 is shipped, thats really bad, even with a petition going around with 25,000+ signatures we havnt got any word on that.

I don't blame F.F.C. for getting upset.
The godfather was anything but a shoot 'em up.
The brillance of the film was PLOT...PLOT...PLOT!!
There is no posible way for this to reflect the quality of the original.

And what with EA sports jumping on the violence bandwagon.
I know it's been a while now but they used to be so proud about their games not containing ANY violence and that they were rated "E" so the whole family could play their titles.

Brando's voice may not be heard in The Godfather

The much-hyped vocal performance by the late Marlon Brando in EA's forthcoming The Godfather: The Game may not be used in the title after all, according to a New York Times report this week.

The newspaper reports that the recording session with Brando - claimed to be the last professional work he did before his death last year - were hampered by the actor's "fragile condition," which meant that he could only breathe with the aid of an oxygen tank. As a result, EA has been forced to turn to a sound-alike to record the dialogue of Vito Corleone for the game - although the company says that it may still be able to use some of Brando's recording in some context.

Fellow actors Robert Duvall and James Caan have recorded dialogue to reprise their roles in the classic movie for the game, although the key character of Michael, played by Al Pacino, will not feature Pacino's voice or likeness as he declined to be involved. The Godfather, one of EA's key releases both on current-generation platforms and as an early next-generation title, ran into controversy earlier in the year when Francis Ford Coppola, director of the movie trilogy, publicly disassociated himself from the project.

His statements, however, directly contradicted claims by EA's producer on the product, David De Martini, who told GamesIndustry.biz that "we've met with [Coppola] on one occasion and we shared with him what our vision was for the game, and where we were going to go... He isn't choosing to participate in the project, but he did invite us up to the Coppola winery where he has his own private library."

The title is due for launch on PS2, Xbox, GameCube, PC, PSP and Xbox 360 later this year.

A representative from Electronic Arts UK has confirmed to Eurogamer that, despite rumours to the contrary, there are currently no plans to release The Godfather on any Nintendo consoles. The rumours emerged after some bright spark spotted that EA Italy had the game down as a GameCube, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS title on its website.
