Well My current system stats are:

MS Windows XP

AMD Athlon Processor

1100 MHZ (Megahertz)

1700 XP+

255MB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 40

I wanted to upgrade my RAM to 500+ and get a better sound card.

Would you recommnd getting a upgrade or buying a new P.C./Laptop all together?

That depends on how fast the AMD CPU is and if you have DDR RAM or not.

It depends on what type of apps you use. If you're a gamer, the vid card and memory are anemic. If you're just web-surfing, no changes are required. BTW, it would helpful to include your CPU speed.

I'm a casual computer user. Don't play games just surf the web. I editted and put the rest of my P.C.'s stats there. I use a lotof programs like ABC, MSN Messenger, Firefox and Photoshop and my P.C. goes pretty slow so I was wondering if I should upgrade it but I'm not to sure at the moment :{

Well I still don't know if that is DDR RAM but if you don't game then adding more RAM would be a wise upgrade. Another 256 MBs.

Yeah as VirtualBody said, getting atleast a 512 mb ram would be a smart idea. The reason that your computer goes kind of slow , is because of the ram, you basically need to get a higher one...

yes, RAM will do, but trust me, processor is as important (if not more in some situations) as RAM. i'd get both if i had the money, but for now go w/ 256 mb RAM @ PC3200 or 2100

I dare say the graphics card and the processor do their fair share of being slow as well.

But for office type of tasks it's the RAM that should be a priority.

How would you like a big upgrade for free?

Simply change your FSB from 100MHz to 133MHz and boost your processor speed to 1466MHz, which is what your XP1700+ should be running at.

agreed. well i think he should bump it up to 133 (isn't much actually now that i think of it) and get that 256. should set him right till the next upgrade, which shouldn't be too long either.

i'd seriosly doubt that, even stock should handle a little boost like that,
bigger question is if the mobo will suport it, mind you if its a prebuilt it wont OC at all, *shrugs* his call though on all of it i think many many many options have been presented to him though
It's not an overclock. It's setting it at the proper speed. His current speed is underclocked.

Well spotted, lynx.

So it was underclocked from it's "stock" speed? Why?

becauser a lot of motherboards are set to 100mhz by default...

Woooooooooow

Thanks for all the replies :). Sorry I couldn't reply faster, was at a New Years party :). Anyways...

I was thinkin' about upgrading it for free by changing it from 100MHZ to 133MHZ - but unsure on how to do that. Anyone fill me in?

Thanks a lot for the replies :)

Well... Without the specifics of what motherboard you have, all I can tell you is that you have to go into the bios and look for the setting of the front side bus.

Really interests me. Pretty cheap and looks effect. I just need to know if they ship computers overseas, and whether they will work in Britain or not :)
