if i interrupt a defragging process, could it cause corruption of the files on the drive it is working on? i was thinking its possible, because it is moving parts of files around right?

I do it all time ,with the set and forget it feature of Diskeeper Pro. Screen saver mode. Never noticed a problem.

If you have a power outage while defragging then there's a good chance of data loss.

once in a while I stop the defragmenting...no problems.
unless you mean shutting the computer off (unplugging) while defragmenting...that's probably gonna give u corruption...

i have a defregger running right now. its sposed to be able to pause itself, but its not responding. i want it to stop, so i thought about just killing it from the task manager, then i thought twice. i want to stop it cuz its eating all my resources and i have no clue of telling when its gunna finish, cuz its not responding.

ok, so bottom line: if i end the task now (or restart; i might have to), will one of my movies become corrupted?

When you tell the defrag program to stop, it will finish the file its in proccess with before it ends, if you unplugg like stated and it doesnt finish with the file at hand, that file will be damaged likely beyond repair

you again....

Good , I use to have that problem with an early version of DK. I would run chkdsk first, then try defragging again and let it finish .

erm
most defraggers now days copy the file its defraging
then after the copied file has been alocated to a nice free space
it deletes the old fragged file

so even if there was power out im sure nothin catastrophic will happen

If there was the slightest chance that power loss during defragging could cause corruption there would probably be law suits flying round the world.

One of the reasons why defragging can take such a long time is because it has to be safe, Fiber's comments are entirely correct.

No. Not true interupted defrag during system files can & does f up an OS.
