if they are connected to a HUB or ROUTER then they need to be connected using a "straight-through" cable.

If they are connecting directly to eachother then you will need a "crossover cable."

The difference between theese cables is that two of the wires are swapped around that means the difference between the computers recognizing and not recognizing eachother.

run network setup wizard on both computers.
they should have the same workgroup and a different computer name.

limited connectivity?
check ur ipconfig...press Win+r, type cmd
then in ur dos console, type ipconfig...
do u see an ip that looks like "169.254.x.x"?

that's a symptom for network conflict, two causes that i know of (so far)...
1) firewall conflict: two firewalls installed in one comp can cause such conflict (u got that avoided)
2) ip settings: ur ips are not set correctly (u might have to look into this)

follow Rossco's advice...let winxp determine the network resources
run ipconfig constantly to see whether the ips show up weird like wat i mentioned above
