Overclocking allows you to realize the full potential of your CPU. However, this is a very grey area, where damage your CPU could leave your machine inoperable. The end result is generally not worth the effort, and I don't recommend it unless you are experienced with clock and bus speeds, and proper cooling of your CPU.

It basically allows you to "push" your computer for that extra mile for performance. Basically it just makes your computer run at a pace faster than that set by the manufacturer =)

contary to popular belief, sensible overclocking ( abt 10% i think ) doesn't leave you high and dry with the most expensive paperweight in the world. Most newer CPUs and mobos will shut down your computer whenever it gets too hot or the voltage is too high. Then again, you'll have to make sure that your mobo/CPU supports it ...

just a questions though ... is the a way to overclock a Athlon classic 750 without the use of a goldfinger ? i'm running on a Asus k7v mobo with 512 NCP ram and GF4 Ti4200

Well overclockijg is a huge topic and can be dicussed forever.

Now what do u want to overclock? Video card or processor.

Now i know how to overlcok an amd athlon xp just go to http://www.tweaktown.com It tells u exactly how to do it abd everything.

Now there is many things u need to take in consideration. One of them being cooling. Cooling is #1 prioority.

Like mentioned above the best souce for overclocking i would have to agree is htttp:///www.tomshardwareguide.com

Now overclocking is nto easy and n00bs should not mess with it. When overclocking u are voiding the warranty and could cause damamge to the pc.

So good luck!!!!!!

good point there ....
one thing to note though ... when OC-ing on newer PCs, dun expect a miracle ommph...
performance is marginally improved only .... not like in the past where the performance was very evident ...

OC nowadays is normally for statistical/personal challenge ...

The results can pretty good. Just remember that anything you do has a very good chance of frying your CPU... ;) ....if you do it badly that is http://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/_950/crazy.gif

For my own overclocking journey....I started off with an Athlon 1800XP @ 1530mhz FrontSideBus of 133 after ramping the FSB to 141 I now get a very stable AMD Athlon 2000XP, at least that's what sandra (http://www.sisoftware.net/) says ;)

I slighty over did it with extra cooling on my machine, (better safe than sorry) and I have run up to about 155...but that was a bit unstable to say the least....random power offs, stuff like that is always a bad sign of a machine running too hot! http://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/3/dont.gif

On a similar note, grafix card overclocking is also something to look into, I've recently upgraded my now well dated GeForce 2 400 MX 64meg for this...

The Medusa!!! The difference in games, is just night and day!

not a very independant review. (http://www.3dvelocity.com/reviews/medusa/ti4200p.htm) but a good one none the less <_<

I like VERY much, it was bought because it is cheap  and easy to overclock, it's currently running at 295mhz when the factory default was 250! Now that's not too bad.
