i have an internal dvd writer on a desktop pc in my house. i was wondering if there is any way of connecting the writer to my laptop. i have one free firewire port open. i figure this is the best way of accomplishing this. is it possible?

you need a extenal enclosure, which converts either firewire of usb2.0 to ide.

well you could setup a network between the two

either through a UTP cable, or firewire like you said........

note that you wont be able to controll the burner this way from your laptop (unless you have special software), but you can burn files using the burning program on your desktop PC, and just pluk the files you need of your laptop (though its prolly better to put them on your desktop PC first, then burn em)

i need more info on this external enclosure idea. right now im networked to the desktop like storm said. this works, but it would be much easier to move the writer to the laptop since im the only one in the house that uses it.

This (http://compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=CDFWCASE-SIL) is the sort of thing you need. Once is is set up you can connect the firewire to your laptop or the desktop PC, whichever way you want to use it.

If you shop around you can probably find it much cheaper than this.

Edit: USB only tends to be cheaper, if that's an option on your laptop.

or you can get a version of nero that will work over the network.
