View Full Version : Symantec Corp AV and XP SP2 question...

With the integration of XP's security center from SP2 into many of the known anti-virus and firewall applications available (meaning how XP now is able to report their status) I was wondering if anyone who is using Symantec's corporate anti-virus 9.0.0.38 (or like version) is able to have their system report the status of that application other than having XP list it as detected but "unknown"? The same with the client firewall if you are utilizing that as well?

I would really sort of prefer XP to report it's actual status the way in which Norton Internet Security 2004 and 2005 do.

Did Symantec release un update through LiveUpdate that deals with this issue and I miss it or have they not yet addressed it?

Does it really matter? The security center is a piece of an annoying shit anyways. <_<

I have checked with Client Firewall 7.1.0.98 and AntiVirus 9.0.0.338 (updates done). They are both detected by Windows Security Center but status is unknown. Perhaps Symantec will solve this with future updates or perhaps not.

Out of sheer functionality, well no... it really does not matter, I suppose. However for the sake of just having everything "play together and get along nicely", it would be nice. :)

9.0.2.1000

Thanks, IKE! I just assumed that since I had a version of SAV 9 already, that subsequent "9.xx versions" would be available through LiveUpdate. Not the case, I take it?

At any rate, If you know of an ed2k link for it, would you please PM me or post it if that is allowed? I would appreciate it! :D

I suppose my last question would be: since I already have Symantec's Client Security installed (which contains AV version 9.0.0.338), can I install the more recent 9.0.2.1000 directly over it? Or would it all require something more involved than that?

I don't think the install of the later version works on top of the Client Security Version. I'm not sure about that but I think I did that test a while back.

I'm not even sure if the later verion solves the "status" issue. Anyway if you get it to work, please tell us.

Here is the verified hash for 9.0.2.1000: http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/t83610-.html

*UPDATE*

http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/enterprise/sp2/compatibility.html

After alittle searching through Symantec's Enterprise support center, the above link should resolve any issues that Symantec enterprise/corporate products have with SP2's security center. Am trying the fix now for Client Security v2.0. I will let you know how it all turns out.

:w00t: And it all checked out well. The patch, though requiring the original .msi file from your install share/CD, enables Symantec Client Security v2 in it's entirety to become compliant with XP's security center. Fun is good. ;)

I'll try that Client Security v2.0 update from Symantec too.

The update went fine. It asked me to insert the CD-ROM and then the update started. Now the version numbers are Client Firewall 7.1.0.1400 and AntiVirus 9.0.0.1400

And... The Windows Security Center now shows the status.

Thanks. Very helpful thread. :)

I found that 9.0.3.1000 version myself and downloaded it. As an expirament just for giggles and yuks, I copied my share of SCS v2.0 to my harddrive and replaced the previous 9.0.0.338 files with this newer versions. I compiled the new share and installed it upon another computer. SCS installed correctly without error, however the anti-virus version still reads 9.0.0.338. SP2 failed to monitor it's status as well until I patched it. I wonder if I did something wrong during the file swap or if something else alittle more out-of-my-league is going on?

Out-of-curiosity: what exactly are the changes between these newer versions and 9.0.0.338 . Being that they are all essentially "9.xx" at heart, I cannot imagine that it could be much.

did you reboot after installing?

did you reboot after installing?

I previously had the original, un-altered copy of SCS installed. I un-installed that completely (I did not remove any of the usual crap often left behind such as program folders or registry keys though) before my attempt with my self-compiled copy. Rebooting of course each time for the un-install then install.

I will try this again on a freshly formatted system soon.

Now that you posted your results it has reminded me of why I thought (previously in this thread) that installing the later version "on top of" wouldn't work.

I had tried the same thing as you, Izagaia. Except that I tried to integrate the 9.0.2.1000 files into the installation (removing the ...338). The ...338 showed up after my test setup also. I then tested it on a fresh Windows install and guess what... the 338 was still there.

I have no idea where or how it got the ...338 version.

Yes, but we are talking about the Symantec Client Security Version 2 suite.

Found something else un-related to all of this from Symantec:

SYMANTEC.ENTERPRISE.FIREWALL.V8.ISO-QUARTEX.ShareConnector.iso (ed2k://|file|SYMANTEC.ENTERPRISE.FIREWALL.V8.ISO-QUARTEX.ShareConnector.iso|155398144|9e12489ad599b225887985c3a51a4041|)

Within this package is something called a "Client VPN". Is that any effective or similiar to the client firewall? Anything that a stand alone desktop has any use for? Sorry for acting as if a dunce in all this, but I figure so long as I am getting educated here in the "what's what of Symantec products"... :blushing: :D

I understand that the firewall included therein is dedicated for server machines. However I do not know what the client VPN is for or how it is used. But it does say that it is compatible for XP Pro and Home systems.

I think the VPN is an acronym for Virtual Private Networking. Not a firewall.

Update: I just tried installing the AntiVirus v9.0.3.1000 'on top of' Client Security with AntiVirus 9.0.0.1400 and as soon as the InstallShield Wizard starts, I get a message:
[! Symantec Client Security is already installed on this machine.]
