T1 is 1.5megabits down.

Also, yeah. DrBeerMan is right, broadband encompases anything over 128KBps down.

In work I have 1024/256 and at home I have 524/256.

azad is most likely full of shit or mistaken.

10 mb circuits are definitely possible but they go through fiber (as do T3s).

For azad to have that connection he would have to have FTTH. Hell you can get 25 mbps!!!

With DSL you can get speeds up to 7 mbps but must live very close to the CO and no where near the old 2.5 mile limit.

Great poll !

I am one of the 7% on dial up due to our telecos monoloply here in New Zealand that calls 256mb broadband and has very low caps, so only 20% of us here in New Zealand have any sort of broadband.

T1 is stuff where you can download and upload at 1.5mb/s, im 3meg/256k so Broadband but no where near T1. T3 is 100mbit type stuff that Uni's and ftp's have. Anything above 10mbit is usually classed as T1 i think

Your post was superfluous, mine was solicited.

Also, no-one posted that they didn't know what translucent meant but I didn't feel the need to enlighten them. I presume that if they want to know then they can google for it. Tho' if asked, I will provide a definition.

Since no-one asked what an oc-180 was we can either presume that people knew already or had googled or simply didn't care.

I'd say that everyone who's heard of an oc-180 knows it's fucking fast, maybe 1% of those people will know the exact spec. That's what I googled for.

Of the people who know what an oc-180 is, NONE of them think a 15 year old lad will have access to one from his appt.

The people who don't know would have googled and thought 'Heh, as if Ziggy's got one of those' - or they wouldn't have cared.

As I say, your post was unsolicited and soooooo obvious it breaks new ground, even c.f your obtuse precidents.

I've never seen or heard of an OC-180 (configuration, but 192 yes) yet I know folks who have access to a lower spec..some in their homes (rich parents with fiber).

Many don't know what an OC-anything is and still don't even with your obvious googling.

Wasn't by choice, I moved to a place where at the time I had neither cable or DSL available. Brighthouse cable ( used to be Time/Warner) finally bought the cheap ass cable company the homeowners association had out here and upgraded the lines, then expanded them to the back of the division where I live. Funny thing is, 2 months later, the phone company made DSL available too

I have been to a research institute where they had the fastest connection in the Uk - I think it was along the lines of several hundred gigabits PER SECOND. Needless to say download speeds were pretty fast :-).

8m/768k. I dont think any of my neighbors have cable internet, because they look too retarded to be able to figure it out, so I think that would be why I get good speeds all the time, if that still matters. If not, then they are still too retarded to figure it out, but someone from comcast did it for them, and they only check email apparently.

10 mbps here. Holy shit is that possible??
at school I have 44mbps(that is what resnet runs at, but of course, there are a lot of users)- great seeing four downloads going at the same time at over 2000 kb/s (rare, most servers can't keep up.) I am not sure what total download speed I really have because I can't seem to top it out.
at home we have the worst dialup in the world- connects at 24kb/s and never runs over 3kb/s, have seen it at 2b/s

Just gotta be carefull about the download limit- 2gig a day.
Now I gotta get the second line hooked up to my computer as my roommate moved out, yahoo, four gigs a day.

T1 is 1.5megabits down.

Also, yeah. DrBeerMan is right, broadband encompases anything over 128KBps down.

In work I have 1024/256 and at home I have 524/256.

I think you mean 512 not 524, 524 doesn't exist (they go in 128,256,512,1024..and so on)

anyways I have 512/128 and that is classified as ADSL just in case you arn't sure:)

i live in a neighborhood with a lot of living units packed pretty close together. a local isp connects us all together on a kind of extended lan setup (wan? sorry, my networking knowledge kinda sux ) i assume they've got a direct connection to fiber but.... limit my speed to whatever i pay for. (the connection into my apt is with a physical ethernet cable.)

ADSL2+ technology depends on the distance the user is from their exchange, the theoretical speed of ADSL2+ is 24mbit/1mbit but since I live 1.7 km away from the exchange I don't get 24mbit, I am still happy though.

yeah that is what I miss most about school, the problem is that I would download so much at once that my computer would crash. I can't wait for 12MB (not Mb) downloads (inercampus) and 5MB through torrents.

I really did miss my personal fiber line this summer I just wish that my school had enought bandwidth to max it out. we are only on a couple OC-3 pipes and OC-13 and internet2. however everyne else dose torrents so it is actually faster to do wifi (allocated bandwidth) , but I have been able to get high speeds when no one is on campus through the fiber. Also it is not a fiber backbone with ethernet from there one, I actually have a fiber optic line in my dorm room. After that 1.5/256 that I have a home is nothing.

I voted Cable but I don't actually know what mine is. I'm pretty sure that it may be better than cable but who knows (not me). It's 3.5Mbs down and 128kbs up. Downloading speed is wicked. Now if only I didn't live in New Zealand. Beacuse of it everything I download gets slowed down. Oh well, can't have everything.

I have a question. I am guessing most of you live in America (or other than NZ anyway). Do you guys have a limit on your connection. As in for my connection i can upload and download a max of 10GB and then my connection is slowed down to dial up speed. Is it like this where you live?

It really doesn't work like that in the US. When an ISP sets a bandwidth cap, it's more of a scare tactic, more often than not the connection just keeps on going at the same speed and rarely you're contacted about the overage, and even more rarely the client is repremanded.

Normally the caps are set pretty high for basic internet users anyway, around 70GB or so. 10GB is rather tiny, considering you can download that much in a few days of playing Half-Life 2 DM or UT2k4, those maps are pretty hefty files sometimes.

Thanks for the answer.

You know for a "First World" country, NZ has a really crappy internet connection.

Oh well, there is light at the end of the tunnel. I think in December NZ's internet gets upgraded to unlimited. :naughty: Well I sure as hell hope so or else my ISP is gonna have one very angry customer to deal with.

Cable 5.09mbs the highest test score I've gotten. Anybody got any stats on comcast rental modem? I was thinking of getting my own if that would help my speeds.

Speed Test Result
dslreports.com speed test 2006-11-16 15:41:26 EST:
9845 / 367 (Kbps)
(1201.8 / 44.8 KB/sec)

is this odd? I haven't seen any other speeds with this big of a difference up/down or do I just suck at conversions?

ADSL 2+ (20000 / 1100 Kb/s)

I am 3 kilometers away from the broadband central, so actually I only get 7000 Kb/s downstream.
