Thats what my friend just told me is it true?

Yep. It will put more strain on your puter and shorten its life.

FECK. What if it has proper cooling tho? ;)

You can overclock a lot..just keep the temp good and it shouldnt hurt it at all really..

It gets addictive and expensive quick. You'd be better off to spend that time and money on upgraded products imo.

What do you mean by "addictive"?

What exactly is a shorter life?

I've never yet had a CPU die because of old age, and I've been using them for more years than I care to admit to. On the odd occasion that one has failed there has always been a specific cause not directly related to the CPU itself.

Well it would shorten the expected date of it dying but it would be already such a long time away you still won't know the difference.
ie. it will die in 2056. :P

Doesn't the added wear primarily have to do with the core voltage?

That's my impression of things anyway. Running a processor with an overclock but with stock or lower voltage shouldn't screw with the lifespan, at least not much.

Read my guide on Overclocking it explains the dangers and risks about overclocking.

quite right. about the same year that a box of saltine crackers bought 5 years ago will finally become inedible.

This is all so interesting.

The lige of the cpu will most likely shorten if you raise the voltage some more and if the temperature is high. I'd highly reccommend another site other than tigerdirect.com.

I'd recommend a thermal take heatsink like
Heatsink ( $33.99) – Thermaltake Venus 12 CPU Cooler For AMD Opteron and Athlon 64, RETAIL
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-106-038&depa=0

And i would make sure that the 12V rail of the power supply is good , i'd recommend it at 12V@22A if you are planning on overclocking that high....

how do you check your powersupplies 12v rail?

Yeah...a lot of times you can get the 2500XP to a 3200XP with the same voltage...i just raised mine a tad.

sometimes it will have it on the label on the pwor supply...
if not I don't think you can find it other than online if you can find teh exact model there.

Seeing you have aspire , your power supply label shud have a sticker on it
anyway it should look like it; Aspire stock psu's have shitty 12v rails , i have 12V@12A which is completely mediocore for overclocking...
