It used to do it during any download and now it does it during AVG scans? Without any warning at all, after any amount of time, it just turns off. Any ideas?

if its overheating
-Make sure the vents are clear from dust. Give the vents a shot of compressed air to see if it makes a difference. (or use a vacuum cleaner but becareful put on slowestspeed and suck on all holes (careful cause you might damage fan by to much speed)
-keep the backside of laptop lifted up - use book or bottle caps
-option 3 if u dont have warranty and dont care anymore (http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=277460&hl=)

control panel -> system -> advanced -> startup and recovery settings -> uncheck automatically restart (on failure).
If your computer still restarts, then it probably is hardware screwing up somewhere along the line, if it 'blue screen of death's then post the error message it displays and people will try and help, could be hardware or software.

If you want to see if it is an overheating problem you can get programs that will push your cpu to hte limit

I wouldnt susgest your use a program to overclock a laptop CPU just because they overheat so easliy and it sounds like its overheating anyway.

those programs don't overclock they just make the cpu load 100% by giving it lots of calculations to perform, this in turn makes the cpu heat up. If this causes it to crash then perhaps it is an overheating problem.
