No, it shouldnt cause any slowdowns. Buy a nice 160 or 200GB Seagate with 8mb buffer.

Get a Western Digital 160GB SATA on an 8mb buffer, for 95 USD.

I don't know if this will help. Where are you in Canada?
Anyway... In Canada: Both 160 GB with 8 MB cache:
Western Digital IDE: http://www.oemexpress.com/Itemdesc. (http://www.oemexpress.com/Itemdesc.asp?CartId={2F1AE93C-1F99-4292-931B-4EF5AC146E88}&ic=HDDWDC%2DWD1600JB&Tp=)
Seagate SATA: http://www.oemexpress.com/Itemdesc. (http://www.oemexpress.com/Itemdesc.asp?CartId={2F1AE93C-1F99-4292-931B-4EF5AC146E88}&ic=HDDSEA%2DST316002&Tp=)
I too prefer the Seagate.
If you choose the SATA then just check that you system supports SATA before buying.
