INFO:

PeerGuardian 2

PeerGuardian 2 is Methlabs' premier IP blocker for Windows. With features like support for multiple lists, a list editor, automatic updates, and blocking all of IPv4 (TCP, UDP, ICMP, etc), PeerGuardian 2 is the safest and easiest way to protect your privacy on P2P. Plus, by integrating with Blocklist.org, lists are built custom just for you.

PeerGuardian 2 Beta 2 is out. This release complies with the way blocklist.org now works. Follow this steps to update:

1. Close PG2 completely (make sure the tray icon is gone)
2. Go into C:\Program Files\PeerGuardian2\
3. Delete the file pg2.conf
4. Run PeerGuardian2 (pg2.exe)
5. When running it, select which lists you want with the wizard

Hmm, so what's the mem usage compared with Protowall - or indeed the old PG?
I use P'wall on my PC, but it's not compatible with the network card on my laptop.

Oh okay, then I will try this one. Hopefully my computer wont throw up all over me.

Hot Damn! Only uses 789Kb of my page file at once? This is great. The last peerguardian would use 20,000-30,000kbs, and not to mention raise processor usage to 75%! Great program, and easy to update all the filter lists.

How does this new PG compare to Protowall?

How does this new PG compare to Protowall?

Well it blocks the same way pwall does (TCP, UDP, ICMP, etc), and blocks the same IP's. The upper hand that it has, is that its not hard to install, it dosent block almost every site you goto, and it dosent make every site you goto slower.

I like it, and i barley know its runnig, till i open it and see the log.

It doesn't block the same way. Protowall blocks on a server level. And I wouldn't recommend using the Peerguardian blocklists - they have no idea why they block certain IPs. In half an hour of use, I found Yahoo to be blocked, the firefox support forum and a couple of other sites I know to be 'safe'.

Get the Blocklist manager from Bluetack
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=1
and block what you want to block.

I'll use PG2 until the new Protowall beta comes out, then switch back probably.

PG2 blocks some crappy sites and your complaining? I installed protowall, and it blocked its own site. Talk about not knowing what it blocks. It blocks half the sites i goto, and slows down my connection. I rather have PG blocking a couple sites then most.

zero protowall problems here, and zero sites being blocked I dont want blocked, never know its on, and it never made any site go slower that i've noticed. in saying that, am gonna give pg a go again, it's been a while, be nice if it worked, never used to :).

edit: ah never mind, edited the edit........

Yeah blocklists.org fuckinf sucks. it took me over two weeks to find out that it was because of it and peer guardian 2 why, why the images on this site wouldnt load up, puretna.com ( puretna.com is a private tracker site that's dedicated to porn, just like empornium.us) .... i'll try vargas' suggestion..

do you guys use aggressive or normal optimization? I don't understand how that works.

normal i use,
agressive allows ranges to be merged and uses less memory & cpu

example:

normal =
rangeA 1.0.0.1-1.0.0.2
rangeB 1.0.0.3-1.0.0.4

agressive =
rangeA 1.0.0.1-1.0.0.4

rangeB is merged with rangeA and recorded as such in aggressive mode

Shiranai_Baka

so wouldn't aggressive be better?

I have never tried PeerGuardian. I will likely do so on my next reformat- just to know for myself. Using Protowall at the moment.

I cannot really say that I am noticing any difference in using it versus not. I am assuming I have an added layer of defense- do not really know.

In all, I suppose as long as something is in place blocking those nasty I.P. ranges, Izzy is a happy surfer. I am not detecting any system slowdown in web pages connecting/loading or unusual CPU spikes. Bliss in ignorance I guess. :P

works great here. I checked for all the list of ips and it's already blocking some stuff. Pretty cool

Same here, using works great. CPU usage => never more than 1 % lol..
And using Normal mode.
