Buying a bike (UK)

Hey,
has anyone got any advice for buying a bike in the UK, I'm basically looking for a decent, but cheap bike for riding round town. Having looked into it a little I was thinking of buying a hybrid bike, but i don't know any good brands or shops so if anyone can suggest examples it'd be greatly appreciated.
I'm definitely looking to spend less than £300 and the areas where i can buy from are: Bristol, North London or any internet place that delivers.

The one wheeled ones are neat and easy to stow but are a bugger to ride.

The three wheeled ones are really easy to ride but a bit cumbersome for the shed and a tad girlie

Definitely go for a two wheel job.

Whilst nice and chunky looking some of the modern bikes are not as efficient as the more classic touring racers. If it is just for fun go for a hybrid if it is for some serious cycling consider some of the more classical designs. You should get a really good bike for under £300. Although the biking fraternity think nothing of spending £1,000 +. Like everything, it can get silly.

I had to ride a bike to work (about 2 miles) when I was banned from driving for 3 weeks last summer.

Just go round local bike shops to find one you like. Then search for last years model on google. It could save you about £200.

Make sure you buy a hybrid based on a road bike not a mountain bike unless your doing really hardcore stuff because they're are loads faster

Trek does so really nice hydrids proberbly the best and Aluminium frames are worth while.

Claud butler is a good name to look for IMO.... assuming you mean bicycles and not motorbikes. At the price you are talking go for the best basic bike. If you buy one with front and rear suspension for that price you will find the parts used are not going to be exceptional quality
