Recently, my comp wouldnt boot up, so i took out the memory, dust it off a bit, put it back in , and it started up.

Now, the problem is it won't shut off...or should i say it wont stay off. Everytime i go to turn the system off, it would automatically restart. I had already disable the auto restart feature in XP.

The only wa yto shut if off is by holding power button for 5 seconds.

Whats the setting in the bios? Your using soft off when you hold the button in for 5 sec.

whats softoff and hardoff? I've always wondered why sometimes you have to hold it in for a while and other times you dont.

Its just an option in the BIOS so you don't accidently turn the thing off.

Turn off "Automatically restart" in Control Panel->System->Advanced Tab->Startup & Recovery Settings.

Something is failing at shutdown, and the above setting is causing the system to restart. Turning it off should give you an error screen which will allow you to track down and correct the problem.
