The Guts of the Next Box

CPU - Xenon's CPU has three 3.0 GHz PowerPC cores. Each core is capable of two instructions per cycle and has an L1 cache with 32 KB for data and 32 KB for instructions. The three cores share 1 MB of L2 cache. Alpha 2 developer kits currently have two cores instead of three.

GPU - Xenon's GPU is a generation beyond the ATI X800. Its clock speed is 500 MHz and it supports Shader 3.0. Developers are currently working with an alpha 2 GPU. Beta GPU units are expected by May and the final GPU is slated for a summer release. The final GPU will be more powerful than anything on the market today; in game terms, it would handle a game like Half-Life 2 with ease.

System Memory - Xenon will have 256 MB of system RAM. Keep in mind that this number should not be equated to typical PC RAM. The Xbox has 64 MB of system RAM and is a very capable machine.

Optical Drive - As many have speculated, Xenon will not use Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Games will come on dual-layer DVD-9 discs. While the media is the same as that of the current Xbox, the usable space on each disc is up to 7 GB. The drive is slated to run at 12X.

Memory Units - Xenon will use 64 MB to 1,024 MB memory cards. 8 MB is reserved for system use, leaving a 56 MB to 1,016 MB for user data.
Hard Drive - As many have speculated, Xenon's hard drive is optional. 2 GB of the drive will be used as game cache. The final drive size is still being determined.

Camera - Xenon will have a USB 2.0 camera. It's capable of 1.2 megapixel still shots and VGA video. Photos can be used in-game and for gamer profiles. The camera can also be used for video chat. It's unknown if the Xenon camera will allow for EyeToy-like gameplay. Developers are currently using a simulated camera driver.

Sound Chip - Xenon does not have an audio chip in the traditional sense. Decompression is handled by hardware, while the rest of the chores are handled by software. DirectSound3D has been dropped in favor of X3DAudio. The former was deemed too inflexible.

Meh, aren't the cells going to be clocked at at least 4Ghz?

And there are supposed to be at least three of them in the new ps3 I think.

Nope not good enough... I go by where PCs are and compare it to what it'd be by the time the console releases and these specs make me throw up because it could be better.

Oh, right, go out and build a computer with three 3Ghz processors/cores on one board.

Oh, and a radeon chip that hasn't even been released yet.

I highly doubt you'll be able to do that even when this thing gets released. Well, maybe you can get that gpu then, but a triple processor(core) system? no way. Not at a competitive price anyway, and dual opterons(4 cores) won't handle games that well anyway, 'cos they are built for other things.

You gotta remember that this thing will be much more specialized to run one application/game at a time, which means that all its power will be dedicated to the games.

Yeah If you have 512mb of ram Windows is usually using up nearly 256mb of it, i've seen Windows use more than that, meaning with a 512mb your not getting 512mb for games you getting 256mb for games. bSame with CPU, Graphics card and so on. Think that the PS2's CPU is like 450Mhz and this is going to be 3000Mhz X 3

i guess you have a supercomputer at home  .... is it possible if i could use it? it'll only take one sec.

as for the price, lets see here, they'll be Mass producing these things that have 3 processors, a really high end graphics card, and 256mb ram.....i dont know but seems like its gonna be hella fuckin expensive when it first comes out, i mean, xbox rite now in canada is 200 bucks :(

yeh well, new hardware is nice and everything... but xbox and ps2 would still have plenty of life left in them if ms & sony weren't dumping them so quickly in favor of newer platforms. like how about NOT releasing new machines, and concentrating on making better games (not "better looking"... just straight-up better and funner) for the ones we've already invested in?

the production cycle of game consoles has gotten ridiculously short. now we're supposed to switch to a new platform every four years? if we're willing to switch after only four years, then how about three, or two? if they did that with other electronic formats/platforms (like if the cd-audio or dvd-video format was only supported by the industry for four years) people would be running wild, throwing bricks through windows, setting cars on fire, throwing their toys out of the proverbial pram, etc.

but yeah, i'm sure the playstation 3 and xbox 2's hardware will both be awesome. s'just, the current consoles are still perfectly adequate and they COULD still release more & better games for 'um if they WANTED to, instead of abandoning 'um like red-headed bastard babies.

sweet, now if they could use a mouse like controller for FPS games, that would be great! sucks to play FPS with analog >_< too hard for me.

Those are good specs but I think the PS3 will blow it away.

It comes after the Xbox and I can't see Sony releasing an inferior product since they won't be early this time.

@3RA1N1AC- I think the PS2 has had it's cycle. The Xbox and GC haven't and are basically playing catch up to Sony.

my guesss is for a console it'll be about 300, which is pretty steep still, but with all that power, its worth it. have to save for awhile tho :(
