Ok I'm about to eat a ham and cheese ciabata (them microwave rolls I told you about) , trouble is, it's out of date yesterday

You reckon it's safe?

I also got a chicken one.

gently flip your ear forward
you should be able to read some numbers on the back (in mirror)

that is your expiration date ;)

Jonno

I always assume there must be some sort of margin of error in the dates, otherwise they'd keep getting sued if people got ill and it wasn't after the expiry date...

(Also, I don't really care if you get sick... :P )

No, if it states "Sell by: " then there is a margin and can still be consumed after that date, if it says (as my food does) "Use by" that is the last safest day to consume it, and if you eat food after the "Use by" date and get sick you can't complain cos you ignored the advice on the pack.

And I agree, I don't really care if I get sick either, been sick for 6 weeks so may as well

Yeah, but if for some reason the food degraded faster than expected, and you ate it at like 11:30 pm on the use-by date, and still got sick, then they'd be in trouble, so I think there'd be a good couple of days after the use-by date when it'll be OK..

I had out of sausage rolls today.. nothing to worry about, maybe some ripe farts this evening, that's all...

No, if the used by date is 10/03/05 then it's to be consumed by midnight on the 09/03/05

If the food is bad before that time then yeah.

The general rule of thumb I use is...if it smells ok, eat it. If not, don't....

I had a bad cold for the past 6 weeks, my sense of smell is also pretty much fucked anyway, so I can't do that.
I've been told to "Have a wiff" of a bad chicken which aparently stunk, I could'nt smell a thing.

I guess I'll find out in an hour or so.

In that case.....I guess its just a gamble.....still, if its only a day out, I doubt it will do any harm.

RIP Jonno.....

feed it to the dog first, then follow him around with a shovel just to worry him.

Feed it to the cat.

Cats won't eat food gone wrong.

Btw. i eat "öut of date" food all the time.

Mostly i save about 50-60 % on the price that way.

I buy my fruityoghurts at the market at 1/3 of the retailprice and eat them till

1 week after purchace.

So, feed a ham and cheese ciabatta to the cat. if the cat doesn't eat it, then don't eat it but if the cat does eat it then it's okay to eat

Oh right, you had me really confused then.

Did you mix me up with someone that's not pedantic.

Just as a point of interest. I know, that will be a change. If you buy 'packed' fruit in a supermarket there is a 'use by date' on it. If you buy 'loose' fruit there is no 'use by date'. Probably came from the same tree at the same time.
