What is with the American (and other countries) way of writing a date?

Here, today is the 10th of March 2005, written "10/03/2005"

In america and some other places you write 03/10/05

Why put the month first?
It goes up, the day is smallest time scale, then month, then year.
Same as time, "20 minutes past 4" , not 4:20, that sounds stupid.

Not having a pop, I'm just wondering where the logic comes from to put the month before the day?

11/9 isn't catchy

It was spose to be catchy?

What about before that? it's always been the same, I just wondered what logic there is to it.

i don't get it either - more logical is : d-m-yr

It's cos they wanna change stuff, lik ewe just had mothers day and they think thats weird, yet we been doing that for 400 years on, but we're wrong?

Ok I can see this is gonna go into a rant so I'm gonna be quiet now

d-m-yr
could be seen as
da-mn-year
which is something europeans are known to say when depressed - "DaMn Year and i'm DaMn Yer ass"

yet in the usa
m-d-yr
could be seen as
mo-d-year
possibly interpretted to - "this is a Mod Year(again) and where gonaa Mod Yer ass"

ok i'll stfu now - just trying to find some kinda of logic

because when you write the date you go Month Date, year. (March 10, 2005)

So it would only make sense to do it that same way when writing it all in number form wouldn't it? (03/10/2005)

i think some places have y-m-d

Jon L. Obscene
03-10-2005, 01:30 PM
Yeah well that makes sense cos it's largest to smallest.

Thats what I don't get, they do Middle, Small, Large (m-d-y)
There's no logic to it.

Think of it like this, you go to a cafe and on the menu it says

Coffee.... Medium , small or large

You'd be like.....wtf?

Well you might, but I'd tend to write 10th March 2005 ...

10/03/2005 ...

10th day of March in the year 2005 ...

I'd be one to favour the y/m/d format.. more logical if you think about it..

I'd say I was born the tenth of October 1979, but I use the y/m/d format when writing it 'cos that's the format used in our personal number thingies.

One advantage of my great age is that I remember several turning points in American ( and, by definition, world) history.
It is with crystal clarity that the decision on how to write the date comes back to me.

I was but a lad and not qualified to vote in the matter, but I followed the debate with great attention.

As I recall, the primary reason behind arranging the month, day, and year as we do was "to piss off all them nancyboy Euros with their highfalutin ways."

It really was that simple.

Oddly, that simple decision became the cornerstone for our entire foreign policy.

Which seems to be working out as intended.
