Hi guys,

First time poster, so I'm not sure if I have the correct forum, apologies if I am in the wrong forum.

I'm having a problem with the copy of C&C Generals that I've downloaded. I downloaded it using on of the has keys I found in this forum for a working version by J Killa.

Having unzipped the file (what is unace?) I follow the instructions in the help file, run setup & wait, run key gen, run insert keygen and add key and then finally attempt to run Generals by clicking the executable. I get the graphic image for Generals but it then pauses and the image disappears to be replaced by a "Technical Difficulties" dialog box, informing me that a serious error occurred.

Does anyone know if this is because I have a corrupted version or for some other reason (something that I'm not doing?)?

Any help would be appreciated.

It is the 185MB size one, that doesn't need me to do anything but uzip it?

I attempted that first time round, unzipped and ran the executable. Got the graphic image for Generals and then right away got a technical difficulties dialog box.

Then I looked through the directory and saw a help file which instructs as in my original post. After doing this and running Generals, I still get the technical difficulties dialog box but it takes around 10 seconds to appear.

Hmmm shoudl I have Direct X installed by default on XP? I can't see it anywhere, maybe that is the prob (not used this as a games machine at all). Downloading version 9a now, might work, will let you know.

you need to run another setup file try running the
setup.bat
or
setup.exe
this will decompress everything else and it will take a while ;)

I did so, but no luck. I have discovered it is not the a problem with the software but with my 19inch Proview monitor, very annoying as I have to try and work a solution for this.

I'm running XP and what usually happens is whenever I launch a DOS based program or a game, I get a "Frequency out of range" message generated by the monitor as it flickers for a moment and then proceeds. Its been a minor anoyance, but nothing else.

So I've managed to aquire a copy of Command and Conquer: Generals and the damn game won't run because of this problem. I'll get the opening graphic shot of the game within in windows but it will then fall over after generating the "Frequency out of range" with a message of "Technical Difficulties" generated by the game.

I know the game and software works fine as I tried it on my K700, very slow on that so I cannot even use that as a substitue.

Anyway, thanks for the input, Master YodaX.

What are the settings on your monitor? Try lowering your refresh rate maybe. I'm not hardware expert but maybe if you change some settings it might work.

I'm getting the same problem - tho im not so sure it's my monitor. I'm runnin WinXP aswell. Here's what i've done:

1) - Unzipped the .exe downloaded from Kazaa
2) - Run "divine sound extractor"
3) - Run Setup.bat (this doesn't seem to take more than 10 mins...)

but when i try to run it it says serious error.

Any ideas any1? I've also tried it without runnning divine with the same results.

did you say DOS based game? I'm not 100% sure but i think i read somewhere that XP doesn't work well (if at all) with DOS based programs.

^ That is correct, games that were written purely for a DOS based system (Win95 and 98) will not work in WinXP. However, I can't see more recent games not being XP compatible. And im sure it would be more a case of the program not running at all than a technichal diffuculties dialog box being displayed.

Half of the ppl, who get "Tecnical difficulties", or "A serious error has occured"error when starting the game have not waited for the .bat file to decompress completely..U must wait till it explicitly says done ( I think it auto-closes itself  )

And "unace" means decompress a .ace file, like "unzip" mens decompressing a .zip file ;)

Oh, and U don't have to manually run the "divine sound extractor", just unzip, run setup.bat(all the way), run the keygen, then run the key insert app, and paste the key from the keygen, and run the game ;)

p.s: C&C Generals is NOT a DOS based game, it runs perfectly well under win XP, tho some older DOS games, wont...

I left the .bat file to go until it said something like "this was compressed using UHARC, now go play. Press any key to continue..." - and it would close. I didn't unace anything, so maybe that's where the problem lies. (unless the original .exe is the ace file)

I tried that, the refresh rate on the monitor was 60, moved that up to 75 and 80 and no luck on either attempt. Downloaded latest drivers for the monitor but once again, no luck.

I did let the setup.bat file run until it closed the dos window itself, so I know that isn't the problem.

Going to try mailing the manufacturers of the monitor for support, if that fails, then changing the monitor is the only option.

He's got a point there. If you have a valid piece of software and it doesn't work then you have a better case. You never know with downloaded software.

Unfortunately I ran into this dialog box error myself on my secondary 900mhz based system. Try updating DirectX to latest version for your OS. I did and was able to supercede the error box and the only problem is that it plays slow, very slow because of the graphics card. Running a older ATi 32MB Rage Pro card and it seems to be the problem.

Primary system running Athlon XP with a Geforce4 Ti4200 128MB and it runs flawless. I'd start with the DirextX upgrade and see how things go. If the card is better than what I listed on my secondary, you may have more luck.
