View Full Version : How fast is 1.5 Mbps?

Rip The Jacker

I'm still on dial-up here, and I'm thinking about getting SBC's Yahoo DSL.

They're offering a package with "Up to 1.5 Mbps" for $19.95 a month for the first year. When downloading, how fast is 1.5Mbps exactly? Is that 150Kb/sec max?

And is that a good deal?

manker
03-18-2005, 01:29 AM
Technically the max is 187KBps but in practice, what with noise on the phone lines and stuff, you're likely to get about 170ish.

Good deal tho' :01:

I had 1.5dsl before. It wasnt too bad. A world of difference in the dial up for sure. Im on a cable modem @4Mbs, and I dont see a very huge difference due to server bandwith. You cant DL any faster than they can UL. Anyway, for 20 bucks mo...its a deal. Of course, you'll have to buy a modem.

According to them, the modem is free. But it says something about buying an ethernet card. Isn't that the 10/100 LAN most mobo's come with?

Most newer mobos will have the 10/100 built in, just look on the back of your box, it is a little bigger than the phone plug if you are unfamiliar with it.

Whats a NIC?

Stands for "Network Interface Card." Pronounced "nick," this is the card that physically makes the connection between the computer and the network cable. These cards typically use an Ethernet connection and are available in 10, 100, and 1000 Base-T configurations. A 100-Base-T card can transfer data at 100 Mbps. The cards come in ISA and PCI versions and are made by companies like 3Com and LinkSys. So if you want to connect your computer to a network, you better get yourself a NIC.

As long as it's compatible with the modem then yes (in most cases it is).

I always thought that SBC Yahoo gave a dial up account included in the price.

1.5 isn't bad, and for 20 bucks it's a sweet deal...but if i were you i'd start looking for 10mbps+. we used to have telus adsl b4 but due to area cachement shaw cable offered us 10mbps w/ unlimited download but only 20gb upload (bastards). we accepted (well my dad did w/e). 10 mbps is pretty slow i must say (and yes it is dedicated, i dont share w/ anyone in my neighbourhood). we pay about 40 canadian for that, and since 20 american is like 30ish CAD, i'd start looking for 10mbps :) just my thought.

edit:

example for 10mbps on say BT(shadow's exp) from a site like elitetorrents:

avg download speed: 250kb/s
avg upload speed: 60kb/s

example for 10mbps on say FTP:

avg download speed: 1.2mbps+

fastest i've seen my speed go is on good old crappy Steam, i've seen it go as high as 2.5 mbps (that's 2.5 mb download a second)

To 10 mbps you'll pay out the ass with no definite speed increases. There's no need to even waste time looking for 10 mbps internet.

Furthermore, it's super hard to find.

As of right now, 1.5mbps is just fine compared to 56K. I'm just glad its only $20 a month, because I plan on buying a new PC this week also.

I was looking at their FAQ, and it said that their self-installation kit does infact come with a NIC. When it arrives, should I install and use their NIC, or the ethernet port my mobo already has? I just don't want the extra work, will it make any difference?

I had 1mb for a while, as somone who over abuses his ISP and that fact that my FTP site owner said leech all you want ( :01: ) The max you can do is 16gb a day, with 480gb a month max, thats download only though. On it i managed to do over 400gb one month but i had tons of hdd space and my pc was hardly never off. I went from 56k>600k>1mb>1.5>3mb

The 1mb>1m5mb>3MB have all been free upgrades from my isp though.

You have to stick them on the phone-jacks to filter out the DSL from your phoneline.Read that carefully, it's the one bit that even experienced users get wrong. They often put one at the start of an extension cable with the cable in the phone side, then put another just before the DSL modem, this time on the DSL side.

Of course the first filter has blocked the DSL signal so nothing gets through.

you should learn the difference between a bit and a byte. internet bandwidth is advertised by isps in bits, so your internet package does NOT say "up to 1.5MB" (1.5 megabytes), it says "up to 1.5mb" (1.5 megabits). in contrast, most windows programs measure internet bandwidth in bytes.

8 bits comprise a byte. 1.5 megabits equals roughly 200 kilobytes. mistaking a bit for a byte is like mistaking an inch for a foot.

so if internet explorer or whatever program is telling you that you're getting 384 kilobytes per second, then you are getting nearly twice as much bandwidth as promised by the isp. :P

but anyway, 1.5 megabit/second internet service should get you roughly 187 kilobytes/second download speeds, and 3 megabits/second would be about 375 kilobytes/second. it makes a lot of sense when you know the "8 bits = 1 byte" rule.

yeah $60 for 1.5 megabit is a pretty high price. i'm paying about $40 for 3 megabit... was paying approx the same as bigdawg, but the trick is that some isps will keep charging you the "introductory" price if you sign up for another one-year commitment.

so if your commitment period has run out and your isp is charging you a really high price, try giving them a call and see if they are willing to give you a discount in exchange for committing to another year.

I did the same and now I pay $29.99.

I told Comcast I would switch to Verizon (the company I work for) and would pay the $29.99. They changed it to Verizon's price. I did the same with my dial-up and it dropped from $14.99 to $9.99 and they both were entirely different companies.

yeah that works too, the old "i'm thinking of switching to the competition... you wanna match their price instead of losing a customer?" threat.

phone companies, isps, and cable/satellite services... they kinda want you to have the impression that the prices are set in stone, but competition is so stiff that when push comes to shove their prices totally ARE negotiable. you just need to pick up the phone and push 'um a little bit, and you can walk away with a nice discount.
