I used to use AOL (3 month free trial) and called to cancel today. I got ahold of some dude who can barely speak English, it went a bit like this:

Me: Yeah I wanted to cancel AOL.
AOL: Ok is there any reason why?
Me: Yeah I just switched to SBC Yahoo DSL.
AOL: Ok, one moment please. What is the primary reason for this switch.
Me: Um... I wanted a faster connection.
AOL: Ok, you needed faster speeds, why? What do you do online?
[Right then I think to myself "What the hell do you care?"]
Me: Not much really... chat with friends, browse the web. (Pirate music :P)
AOL: And... is that all? Why do you need great speeds?
Me: I got tired of waiting for the pages to load.
AOL: Ok, your free trial doesn't end until the 29th. In the meantime...

Blah blah blah blah blah. He kept talking about why I could pay for AOL for Broadband just because it has a firewall and anti-virus. I told him I had all that stuff for free already, he wouldn't shut up about AOL's firewall offers 7 layers of protection or something.

He tried to be sneaky, I would say "Sir I appriciate the offer but..." and he would rudely interrupt "Sir I'm not offering you anything. I'm just saying that most.... blah blah blah."

In the end he just wouldn't cancel my AOL service! He said to try their firewall for free and see how I liked it, I told him I would (yeah right), and call back if I don't like it (in about 5 min).

I could barely understand his accient and was annoyed so I gave in, crap they are persistant.

yes same problem here, keep calling dude until you talk to someone without an accent.

My experience:
switched to SBC Yahoo DSL
1st attempt: the guy had no accent and said yes your account will be cancelled at the end of the month

check the credit statement and it says that we were billed for AOL for Broadband, wtf?

2nd Attempt: Dude with a latino accent I believe could tell but he said that everything will be taken care of and we have it under control and all that other bs

check credit statement agains says I have been billed for AOL Broadband again

3rd and finally attempt: it goes through to a nice women see gets it cancelled in minutes

But still they charged us for three months in which we didnt use AOL

Just tell them that you want to cancel. When they try to ask you questions just ask for their supervisor. Once you get him on the line tell him straight out: "Cancel my service NOW!!!" Don't talk about anything but the cancelation of the service.

yes that was my biggest mistake not asking for a supervisor

There, finally after telling a second rep. I don't want AOL for Broadband, he canceled my AOL. Done with that.

They actually charge you for AOL on top of your DSL. Its like paying monthly for spyware/virus protection and a firewall. You can get all those for free off the web.

@VB1234 and dsa16
 I was thinking about doing that, but I didn't want to sound rude. I'm too nice for that. :P

They nag you alot and become desperate.

Congrats on the connection upgrade Jack.

I applied for an ADSL connection on the 1st of this month.
My ISP had me all set up within 5 days.

Trouble is Telstra, the company that runs the phone exchanges here in Australia are slack feckers.

My local phone exchange currently has 0 ports free for ADSL, and 384 ports awaiting the ADSL upgrade.

So me and 383 other people in my area are stuck with crappy dialup until Telstra gets off thier ass.

You could have always sang Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It" down the line ;)

But to be the bearer of bad (but expected news, but AOL have been like this for a bit. This (http://radio.weblogs.com/0128341/stories/2004/12/15/cancellingAolGoodLuckTrying.html) popped up again on one of the blogs I read - Can't teach an old dog...

Still, the follow-up (http://radio.weblogs.com/0128341/2004/12/27.html#a824) was great to read

Cancel the direct debit as well.

Then even if they don't stop the service they can't get your money anyway.

They will switch it off soon enough.

ok ok ok, you can tell them that you download porn movies all the time and you hate waiting days for a good wank. That'll scare them off, but don't laugh or else they'll hang up on you or something! (seriously, try this, I would if I had no choice but AOL)

I tried AOL about 5 years ago on one of those free trial discs. After using it for 10 minutes, I got pissed off with the shitty dial up times and phoned to cancel.

I took me about 15 minutes to cancel my account and in the end I resorted to the childish tactic of repeating "Can I cancel my account?" to everything the AOL operator said to me.

How about we give you another 90 minutes for free?
Can I cancel my account?
Yes you can but why not give it another try, it'll cost you absolutly nothing?
Can I cancel my account?
You say you've had problems connecting, have you tried our support department for technical advice?
Can I cancel my account?
OK can I make a note of why you've cancelled your account?
Can I cancel my account?
Yes sir but I will need to put down a reason.
I've already given you a reason at the start of the call. Can I cancel my account?
OK, could you please refresh my memory?
Can you cancel my account?

It was so funny to hear the operator getting more and more annoyed as I went on.

... but I didn't want to sound rude. I'm too nice for that. :P
It's time to get over that being nice. Those sales people use the fact that people are nice to their advantage. I hope you realize that they are being rude to you by not doing what you request.

These sales people are well trained in the art of blagging people. It`s funny when you can hear them taping a way at the keyboard your details while trying to sell a load of other shite at the same time.

/edit sometimes you just have to be firm with them RTJ.You won`t have been the first person to do it to them. :P

NEVER take up a free trial if you have to give your credit card or bank details first.
AOL is a huge American company and they operate with that big business attitude of money money money first customer second.
Don't get me wrong, I am not against companies making money but I am against poor customer treatment.

The good thing is, I didn't need a credit card to sign up for the free trial. I picked "Phone Bill" as a payment method. It's funny, when you sign up for it, it asks if you want to use Visa, Mastercard, etc. There is a button you can pick for more options, such as checking, etc. There is no "Phone Bill" option, after you click Cancel, then it shows up as an option. They really wanted a credit card number..

The first rep. tried to make me sound like a noob, he kept telling me things like my firewall isn't good enough, their firewall is better because it protects with more layers.

EDIT: Yeah I was nice mostly, but I will speak my mind when I have to. At the end, he goes "How was your experience with AOL customer service?"

I respond, "Yeah I don't like it. I call to request something, and you guys kept giving me BS. Here is a suggestion, when I ask you to cancel my service, do it. Don't talk to me about AOL for Broadband, and don't talk about how my firewall is shitty. Just do what your asked to, geez." I was polite when I said it. :P
