Why is this sad?

The man was physically and mentally incapacitated, and now he is in heaven for eternitiy. People should celebrate, not mourn.

I would agree with Hobbes

It is a time to contemplate and celebrate a life lived in full.

At 84, we should not be greedy and ask him to stay when his body was more than ready to go.

Sympathies to those for whom he was an devotional figure.

Eventually yess, but they have this weird way of selecting the new pope. The bishops go into a room and pray, untill god tells them who will be chosen.

Exactly.

In addition, he used his influence at many times to do good around the world. He used his life to help many - What he has done with his mortal time should be celebrated, and likewise that he has made it to a place of (hopefully) less suffering.

Note that those words are for the Pope only - I'll keep my feelings reserved on the Catholic church.

There wont be a new pope then, because they would have a long wait. :)

What really happens is that the cardinals vote for a new pope. When they have reached a final decision the ballot papers are burned. The smoke coming out of the chimney is the first indication that the new pope has been elected. Well that is the way it used to happen. :)

:( It's almost always sad when someone dies, I agree with you guys he had a good life and it should be celebrated.

I just don't understand why they won't let them retire rather than waiting for em to kick it. It wasn't nice to watch him struggling to carry on his work and the last couple of days of the media 'waiting' for him to die seemed a bit macabre to me.

actually the funeral will be within 4 days, after that all the cardinals have to travel to rome and enter what is called the conclave, there all cardinals under 80 write on a bit of paper who they want to be the next pope, you are not allowed to vote for yourself. cardinals over 80 aren't allowed to vote. then as boab rightly said they burn the ballot slips when the new pope has a certain percent of the vote and the smoke you see is from that.

Spider_dude
04-03-2005, 12:22 PM

To continue the smoke theme, I can blow two smoke rings and then blow a single smoke ring thro' the middle of them.

If any of us loungers should be a Cardinal, it should be me :snooty:

I mean what's to say they're not really going to pass a jumbo spliff around and declare the new Pope as the first one so stoned they see God? ;)

Would explain the smoke as well
