i think it's spelled chkdsk

Ya your right sorry , but if your going to get technical ..... heres a link:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/chkdsk.mspx

Made me think to try safe mode, or try the command prompt and force a chkdsk .

Have you tried again after rebooting?

Nice informative thread title, BTW. :)

edit: actually, chkdsk doesn't run on the system drive in Windows so it needs to run on the next boot. Could this be the problem?

this is a constant problem i see on ALL PCs that people have brought me with Win ME installed
my advice to them all: dump ME, period. upgrade to at least Win 2K, hopefully XP
the M$ help links are pish,
because none of the PCs have had Norton Speeddisk,
which seems to be the only thing M$ can attribute this problem to
my guess is it really comes down to 9x/ME's poor handling of system resources ;)
(problems of which 2K/XP do not suffer)
this wont be the last time you encounter this problem john,
and i know you have posted in the past that you are unable to upgrade ATM,
but in all honesty, the sooner the better

I don't know, but you could d/l win xp pro and burn to disk . Or win me for that matter. With out your recovery disk your stuck. Does your hd have a recovery partion ? You know like hold down a key at start up to go to recovery? Have you tryed your floppy boot disk and ran scandisk from A: drive?

ME i do believe needs a boot floppy
go to peat's link, they have it there :)
because if you are planning to dl another OS ISO,
i will say again...2K or XP
it really is not worth your time to dl ME

but with the above mentioned boot floppy,
you should be able to work something out,
a defrag/disk check in DOS perhaps

Windows ME sucks. I would recommend 2000 instead or even go down to 98. ME is just a really bad OS

What do you mean "you cant get your hands on xp"? You have been a member of this forum for almost 2 years now.

Can you even run XP? What are the specs of your PC. Perhaps Win2000 is a better choice.

As for DEFRAG and SCANDISK... They are both available in DOS from a bootable floppy diskette and can run as a command from the DOS prompt.

maybe just 'scandisk' though,
when booting from the bootdisk i linked you to.

Why didn't you answer my 2 questions?

He probably already forgot the questions...

1. Why can't you get a copy of XP ?
2. What are the specs of your pc ?

I think he 's just trying to learn, but with out a recovery disk or win me disk he's probably worried ? I mean I have the patience of a saint ,so helping rookies doesn't bother me. But when I was learning I had everthing at my disposal . :)

@VB , you are right tho . I almost thought , yikes if he lived in Canada I would mail him a copy of XP w/SP2 . :)
