problem installing onboard lan

Somewhat off topic question.
I have an hp motherboard here, with an onboard lan, which i cannot get to work (have installed, uninstalled, re-installed drivers a ton of times)
Windows does not recognize it as anything but an ethernet port.
Any ideas...( i have tried all the realted s/w from hp that i could find...)
Belarc gives me: Board: Hewlett-Packard 085Ch
BIOS: Hewlett-Packard 786B2 v1.11 07/10/2003

It would probably be more useful if you told us the model number. That's usually on a sticker on the top (desktop) or back (tower) of the main unit.

Have you tried HP's driver site (http://www.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html?pageDisplay=drivers) ?

Once you install the ethernet port and enable it you can plug an ethernet cable into(looks like a bigger phone cable) and network that pc to another with an ethernet connection which is your network or lan(local area network)

Ok let me straighten this out. (BTW, im not a computer idiot, unlike some of the people in my family). I built this computer from some spare parts. the motherboard/cpu is from an older hp tower. That's all that was taken from that one.

Yes of course I looked at hp's driver site. tried all the suggested ones, nothign works.
As for saying that it is recognized as "just an ethernet port" I mean that it just recognizes it was a GENERIC unknown device, but as an ethernet port (i am fully aware that ethernet=lan duh :)).

Then try unkown device indentifier it will tell you the model # and help you find drivers.

Its often hard to answer a question like yours without knowing how much you know about pc stuff and without a lot of info, I was'nt underestimating your knowledge bro the question just seemed to read like you could'nt get your lan working because it was showing as an ethernet port :ermm:
I hope you've got it sorted now though.
