I'm glad they're showing they won't put up with spam, but 9 years. Holy crap!
There's alot of people out there who do a hell of a lot worse things and got off with a slap on the wrist basically. This throws the whole system out of whack. If you had a list for the seriousness of crimes I'm sure most would have spamming near the bottom. I know I would, but if it gets 9 years in prison what the hell do the crimes at the top of the list get?. I just think it throws the whole punishment system out of whack. It just doesn't fit the system that's in place.

that all just seems ridiculous to me.
hell, I get real junk mail all the time, and nobody gets arrested for that.
/me doesn't see what the big deal is, as people that get a lot of spam are usually mostly to blame, themselves.

Meh, it's far too lenient, I say.

They should have cut off his hands.

And his nose.

Spammer sentenced to 9 years
First felony spam case in U.S.
Jeremy Jaynes remains out of prison pending appeal.

LEESBURG, Va. - A man convicted in the nation’s first felony case against illegal spamming was sentenced to nine years in prison Friday for bombarding Internet users with millions of junk e-mails.

However, Loudoun County Circuit Judge Thomas Horne delayed the start of Jeremy Jaynes’ prison term while the case is appealed, saying the law is new and raises constitutional questions.

A jury had recommended the nine-year term for the Raleigh, N.C., man.

Jaynes, 30, who was considered among the top 10 spammers in the world at the time of his arrest, used the Internet to peddle pornography and sham products and services such as a “FedEx refund processor,” prosecutors said. Thousands of people fell for his e-mails, and prosecutors said Jaynes’ operation grossed up to $750,000 per month.

Jaynes was convicted in November for using false Internet addresses and aliases to send mass e-mail ads through an AOL server in Loudoun County, where America Online is based. Under Virginia law, sending unsolicited bulk e-mail itself is not a crime unless the sender masks his identity.

Holy moly!!!!

How long was he in operation?
Does he have to pay any fines?
Does he get to keep his money?

I'd do 9 years in a white collar pen in a sec for that amount of dough. I'd be out by the time I was around 35 and still half my life in front of me.
