I got a note from the network services of my company that my internet usage is too high and its a warning. Next time, they will take some actions against me. I know that I do browse sometimes....even for business purpose but the number he told me was too high. They said my computer produced 7477 hits on the day they audited. Now 7477 internet hits means I would be clicking at least every 5 seconds. That is utter rubbish. I can't understand why the number is so high ?
Is it because that when you open a website, it might have 20 different banners and advertisements in it and they will contact different links producing multiple hits?
Also, can it be because I leave my IE window open sometime and go to meetings and that's why it keep getting the latest data?

Please let me know.

Mabye their network got hacked , or a virus is on your computer . Tell them to send tec support up pronto. Just make sure you have nothing to hide like e-mail jokes, pOrn etc.

P.S. Play dumb ! :)

i think he is saying that he is getting shit from his employer for using the company machines to surf the net, not that the isp is having the fit about it. i would definitly check your machine for spyware and dialers, that may be where the hits are comming from.

why is he an asshole?

seems to me he is taking an active role in making sure his employees are working instead of surfing the web all day.

But my initial question remains unanswered:

Is it because that when one open a website, it might have 20 different banners and advertisements in it and they will contact different links producing multiple hits?
Also, can it be because I leave my IE window open sometime and go to meetings and that's why it keep getting the latest data?

Maybe a simple blocker could fix that or even using FF instead perhaps...

yeah when you open a website it will make connections to all the different servers with banners on that page... unless you use mozilla and set it to "don't accept images from 3rd party websites"
