Guys,

I have used my PC for more than 3yrs now and I want to replace it with a new one. I really want to build a powerful and durable PC that can handle serious gaming and cd/dvd burning with astonishing performance.

Please I need your suggestions on the following;

Mobo:
CPU:
Ram:
Hard Drive:
Vid card:
DVD burner drive:
CD burner drive:

Please you may add your reasons for your choices. Thanks in advance. :)

Look, I'm no expert, but if you want the Hardwareworld crowd to help, you'll need to specify a price range.

If you dont need a monitor you should be able to get a decent Athlon 64 system with that

That falls under CPU, thanks. I have a nice flat screen monitor already so it's not on the list.

No affence Sameer, But all those parts suck. :lookaroun

Go with an amd 64 processor :) Get 1 gig or ram. I guess it would be safe to say go with a SATA harddrive WD or Seagate. For a mobo go with something like a gigbyte or abit (With a PCI-E slot). For a videocard Id go with a higher end ATI X800 PRO ( My future card :D ) oh yea and make sure its a PCI-E card not agp. PCI-E is faster. :)

Oh plueeeze, gimme a break- this is what I do for a living.
The fact is that "astonishing" performance comes at a price.
A price somewhat higher than $1K.

What you are going to buy is the basic platform for the Dream Machine which you can flesh out as money allows.
The nForce4, socket 939 motherboard would seem to be a stable path into the forseeable future...my fav ATM is the Gigabyte.

All the SATA, 1394 and USB a boy could ever want...all for just $140.

Nice, low-latency RAM, depending on your plans, either several 512 modules or a few 1GB sticks. $70 for 512MB.
Seagate SATA HDD.
Pick a size, but get Seagate no matter what (best warrantee in the biz).

Optical drives don't much matter.
Most folks don't burn enough media that speed is a real issue, so get what you like. I've always favored LiteOn, but just got a Plextor for myself ( mainly because of the SATA interface).
Be aware that there is no such thing a DVD blank media readily available in speeds over 8x, so your 16x burner will be starving for discs....

The sweet spot in video cards right now is the 6600GT-biggest bang for the buck. If you can afford it, the 6800GT is a worthwhile upgrade.
You'll notice that the board I chose is NOT SLI...I think the upcoming 512MB cards (ATI has one in the pipeline already and nVidia is soon to follow) will make the added complexity useless to all but the very well-heeled gaming fanatic.
Figure $300 and up, depending on your choice.

You'll notice that your $1000 is getting a bit thin already.
Are you astonished?

CPUs...ah yes.
Current choice would be a 90nm Winchester, but the new Venice cores come out next week and the San Diegos the week after.
No one is sure what the real world advantages might be of the new chips, so you'll just have to wait a month or so for results to come in.
No matter what, plan on $200 and up for the flavor you pick.

A PC like this demands a decent PSU.
Literally...it will fry a cheap supply such as those commonly bundled with cases in a heartbeat.
The Antec NeoPower 480 is a proven performer...my next choice would be the OCZ Powerstream 520 ( it lacks the modular cabling that I like, but features adjustable rails...I have one on the way to test)
Price: $100 and up.

Hmmm, what's left?
A case, certainly.
Any box will do, fortunately for you, as the budget is dwindling.
Cooling the 90nm chips is no big deal...the stock HSF will work just fine.
The hottest component by far in my rig is now the video card (I pity the SLI guys as their choices are severely limited by space constraints).
Cheap case can be modded to suit, higher end cases offer better solutions out of the box.

An operating system.
Presumably Win XP.
Have a spare copy laying around?

Did I forget anything?

no, but I bet they forgot the monitor, unless one has been purchased recently. as has already been brought up in another thread, although I have a decent Graphics card, it would be pretty useless if I was not using a good monitor
