For the last couple of weeks, when I've been downloading anything, my pc slows up after a while, when I checked the task manager there was a program called smc.exe(part of Sygate) hogging 80% of my cpu, had to uninstall Sygate and install Zonealarm until I find something better.

Anyone else have this problem?

Any tips on a good firewall that uses little resources?

ps, had Sygate running on my pc for a couple of years with no problems at all, was really happy with it but it's gone tits up now. :(

I just spent a month testing between ZA; Sygate and Outpost.
It was funny how I have the same surfing habits and Sygate reported numerious attacks when ZA and Outpost reported 0 to very few. All of them were the latest builds also.
My conclusion: I went back to an older version of ZA 4.5.594.00.

I've been using Zone Alarm for over a year now...have to configure it to your surfing habits, but works great.

I'd keep and update ZA...it's the best.

Sygate is good, but only if you avoid the later builds.
Seems like the Sygate devs took a program that was working perfectly and screwed it up more with every release.

I've found version Sygate 5.5 build 2516 to be reliable, so that's what I'm stickin' with.
Any build after that throws weird errors on shutdown or chews up system resources for no apparent reason.

I use the latest build of Sygate Pro, runs fine
maybe you gave up too quick uNz[i] :P

I know cpu loss can be distressing, I recently had Firefox do the same :(
only thing I could think of to do for now was,
just quit using it, moved on to Opera....for now.....I want Firefox back
need to try and roll back to 1.0.2, as it seems 1.0.3 was the only one that ate cpu

had you done any updates on it dodgy?
sig update, proggy update? or had you not updated in a while?
think of what you had/had not done to it, and try reversing it

 Hardly. I put up with the shutdown errors and/or resource hogging through 5 program updates before I got sick of it all and went back to build 2516.

Hadn't done anything new to it, can't think of anything that could have affected it, ZA is running smoothly so I'll stick with that for a while.
